>>>SPOILERS<<< Star Wars discussion

Yup, having watched a New Hope, the day before seeing The Force Rising, the plots are not just similar, they are damn near identical.

And it's IMPOSSIBLE to overlook this, if, IF you either watched ANH recently, or remember it well. Which to me means most people who give TFR such high ratings, don't fall into either of those categories are completely new to the SW universe, or have a very casual familiarity with it.

Which is fine, up to a point. After all this movie was meant to create new Star Wars fans. The problem is Jar Jar Abrams alienated old star wars fans to do it. The movie also fails to have any depth to it on it's own.

Instead it's just a "fun" movie. Lots of special effects, lots of action, little content. The problem with that approach is it leads to nothing but mediocrity, and more crap.

Of course much like say Transformers, there is enough inertia in the franchise that it will keep going for at least 2 more movies. Probably a lot more.

You can also very very clearly see the influences of Harry Potter and LOTR on the movie... Snoke = dash of Voldemort and Gollum. Kylo = Snape. Right down to the long hair, and I'm sure ultimately a redemption at the end.

I'm glad to see that that at least the regular unpaid reviews on IMDB are overwhelmingly negative. Given time, once the shine wears off, or maybe the target audience grows up just a little, the movie ratings will be more in line with reality.

Appears that is what they did, they knew this formula worked for the past generation, let's just use it again!

Yeah, but they also dumbed it down. Too much. I wish disney/abrams had more respect for their viewers.

The original had at least basic explanations and rationale for what was going on, and how things worked. Ben explained the force. Han's predicament with Jabba explained why he got involved. His greed explained why he went to rescue Leia. Tracking beacon on falcon, how the resistance base was located. Han's better nature, why he helped Luke at the end.

Resistance existed because the empire was in power.

I mean since the new republic was in power in TFA, wouldn't The First Order actually be "the resistance"?

Yeah, I know.... :horse:

Finally found the perfect way to display my reaction to the movie...

I don't think they reviews will change much over time. I think they are fairly accurate. It was in fact a great movie, in and of itself. That is how movies are judged. Franchises are judged as a whole.

It was ok but as a star wars movie it wasn't as good. But they could have done worse but it seems that movies like this are always "ok" and not "amazing!" these days.
Even with some of the original actors it seemed off. Can't complain much about it other than it wasn't worth 13 bucks to see. Was a fun night out with family though and the theatre experience is always cool.

I'm going to have to disagree. I believe the reviews will change once the Star Wars hype wears off.

Remember, when The Phantom Menace came out everyone thought it was the greatest thing ever.

[Immediate note: this post will offend people, probably]

I hate it when people go out of their way to dislike something that's objectively good, and fun to watch.

Everybody who is vocal about their extreme dislike of new Star wars, or SW Prequel trilogy, or Transformers or whatever else is "popular to hate" these days is just wanting to feel superior in how they see something lacking in the movies when other people don't, how they feel their taste in movies is super-fine and above other people.

To those people: your vision of a "good" movie is a fantasy and will never happen. You won't ever genuinely enjoy and be amused by seeing a movie because you're just so concentrated on hating popular stuff, and seeking for stuff to object to and enforce your vision of a "bad" movie that you're just completely missing the point of the movie, and the fun it offers.

I personally loved prequel trilogy (over original trilogy because good god you people, those movies are over 30 years old and it shows!), I apsolutely love the sh*t out of SW7, and I love all Transformer movies because they're good movies, and Abram's Star Trek movies are the only Star Trek films I can watch because the rest of the franchise just isn't as good.

To everybody who loves jumping on a hate-train for fun movies just because it's cool and because they feel superior in hating cool movies: you're missing out. You are deliberately choosing to not have fun. Worst part is, there is literally nobody on this entire world who thinks highly or better of you for proclaiming you hate good movies. Sure, exchanging a few "Sucks, right" comments over the internet maybe feels good to you for that particular minute, but trust me - it cannot possibly compare to the fun you would have if you would just for once go with an open mind to a cinema, instead of filled with prejudices and intentions to reinforce them.

Rant over. Neg rep away.

Episode 1 was a good movie...

I agree, but the majority of the fan base will disagree.

I agree here too, but if someone genuinely does not like the movie, why try to make them? because others enjoyed it?

Unfortunately, the problem is that when the prequels came out they had a fresh story, new characters and a different feel to them. This garnered them hate because they weren't exactly like the originals. Then they go and make one that is almost an exact copy and people hate it for being too much like the originals. You just can't win.

As EI said, given time, the review scores will fall.
Because everyone's a critic.

I agree, but the majority of the fan base will disagree.

The inclusion of Jar Jar was just bad. The droids were too cartoonish in their behavior (why do centrally controlled droids need to communicate with each other directly, let alone via speech for example?), and the whole pod racing segment was a waste of time. But take that away those blatant bits introduced to appeal to the 4-14 year old segment, and it's an interesting story. It introduced us to new characters, new villains, and old ones from before they appeared bad. It literally showed us beautiful, visually striking places like Naboo, and Coruscant. Meanwhile, TFA... desert planet check, jungle planet based check, tavern scene... check.

Edit: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120915/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 The top review, from 2005, and currently shown, really caught my attention. I disagree with the 10/10 rating, and pod racing, but the second to last paragraph is extremely on point.

Sadly, had Lucas made a film that was little more than a remake of STAR WARS with Anakin in the Luke role, fans would have been happy. And I think that says more about the limited scope of STAR WARS fans than it does about the talents of George Lucas.

I hate it when people go out of their way to dislike something that's objectively good, and fun to watch.

And I hate it when people jump on a marketing inspired hype bandwagon, inevitably becoming hypocrites as they try to poorly use the very same arguments of those they decry.

You like the movie? Great. Lots of people didn't and not because they want to appear "cool" but because in their opinion the movie failed to live up to it's promise.

Bother to notice something else? Most of the people critical of the movie are those that had high expectations and were emotionally invested in it. People that wanted to like it. People that remember the other six movies very well, and especially the dated originals.

What they got was a plot hole ridden remake of a movie they have already seen. Almost scene for scene, and plot point for plot point.

Meanwhile most of those that loved it, or think it's ok, are those that just wanted a fun flick. And there in lies the problem to the critics, myself included, it's an utterly forgettable movie. It it hadn't been a star wars movie, I would have left it a 6/10 rating and moved on. But it is, and it should be held to a higher standard, not excused for not living up to expectations.

It's pretty telling what you want from your movies. Mindless non stop, plot absent action, with a side of product placement. I mean that's literally the last transformers movie.

That's ok though, everyone's entitled to an opinion, and yours is exactly the one modern day Hollywood loves.

You should use the edit button instead of double posting. This isn't the religion thread you know :poke:

The edit button is to be used when adding new information to an existing subject. A new post is the appropriate course of action when proving new information, disconnected from the original post. Grow up.
