Spiro controller?

from what i have read, it isn't just a plug and play unit. you need to have it hooked up to your computer. but if that is not the case then it seems pretty cool and resonably priced

No, usually these units needs only the power supply, from the PC ..... the real problem is another .....

First of all, these are designed for work with PC fans, that are not normal DC motors ..... PC fans have inside a "2-phases self-switching" circuitry ..... there's a hall sensor that detect the position of the poles in the rotor (the magnet, in these motors, are rings fixed to the fan part), and "auto-switch" the 2 poles depending to the position of the rotor, making it spin ..... this means that you cannot reverse them, and also, that they have a minimum speed of working, usually from 200 to 400 RPM ..... less of this, and they tend to lock or become unstable.

Second, most of the PC fans, actually, have a third wire that give out a pulsed signal for know the speed ..... some regulation systems uses this signal as feedback, and with "normal" DC motors, they don't work .....

So, there's a good possibility that this unit can work only with 3-wires fans, and not with normal motors .....
