Speech Jammer/Interruptor Instructable

I wanted to share my instructable with you all that I made a day ago. It's already been featured on the front page (I've also submitted it as a tip to hackaday, Gizmodo, and lifehacker).

It only works for casual speech on an average person though. Anyone who is a practiced speaker who has worked in broadcasting can talk through such a "jammer" without too much trouble. Likewise, some accomplished musicians can do it well. All it takes is for one to be able to compartmentalize hearing and speech separately.

Right, but most people aren't radio broadcasters or talented musicians. So it may only work on average people, but that's still like 98% of the population.

There is an app (for Android) called SpeechJammer that does something like this. When I saw your instructable, I got curious to see how it would work, so I downloaded this app (has an adjustable delay).

So, my findings (for me, anyway) are that it doesn't work on me. I tried various settings (from 50ms to 250m) and didn't seem to find anything that "jams" my speech. Like someone said above, "practiced" speakers or musicians shouldn't have much trouble with this. Now, I am neither of those, but the fact that I have ADHD which is treated with vyvanse may play a role in why it doesn't bother me.

Anyone else tried this out? Next time I see some of my friends I plan on having them wear it for a while to see if it screws them up. I'm going to continue to wear this app for the next few hours so, when I talk to myself, I might actually end up jamming myself. Maybe it's because I was aware of the intended effect that it didn't have an effect on me. We'll see!

Yes, I have. It made me talk a lot, so I
can see where you're coming from. It was a
very good med for me at the time. The
withdrawal wasn't too bad, just lethargic
for a couple days. The main thing I didn't
like about it was that it is schedule II,
so the .gov wood knot let me fill it until
it had completely run out.
