Almost double the price but I'll take your advice since you're the engineer I have to save up for the FX-888D.

I was browsing ebay for the tips. I found genuine Hakko tips and its says that the tip is coated with lead-free solder. Can I use lead solder with this tip or not?

I'm no catWhile I love the 1lb spool of Kester solder that a friend gave me, a spool like that will last you several lifetimes.
A while back, a friend of mine had this spool of Kester solder that was made back in '98 that he was about to throw away. I got it from him and when I tried it, the smell was unexplainable, it was like ass. :crackup:The problem with such a large quantity is that the rosin may expire before you get through it. My own spool is probably 7-8 years past its stated shelf life. It still works for me, but sometimes I feel like I need a little extra flux.
It's probable 60/40 because it has this pasty stage that's why Im getting a 63/37 from FT.The solder you have locally is probably fine. Just make sure it's the 63/37 eutectic type and not that 60/40 stuff.
