hi, my solder iron has fumes coming out of it whenever i turn it on

is it broken?

like its coming out from the middle core when i understand fumes should sometimes come out from the tip from the excess solder

i never cleaned the tip n everything
 
nah they just get old. hey look on the bright side... you now have another project LoL

There is no resistor inside a standard Soldering Iron....
There is a resistive heating element.. If the smoke is coming
from inside the Iron I would suggest you stop using it.
It may be that some of the wiring or insulation inside that has
started degrading an burning...
This could lead to an electrical short and be potentially
hazzardous to your health...

and i've just recently started learning how to "properly solder"

i will get a new solder iron for sure
 
oh and laserbee, i see that you live in quebec? i live in ontario

would you suggest buying a soldering iron from canadian tire?

if you know the website dealextreme, they sell soldering irons too, are those any good
 
Is your iron new, or just recently been used? New or unused irons will smoke for about 10 minutes when first used, it will stop. But if it isnt new, then listen to lasersbee....

I would shy away from low priced Irons... If you spend a few
dollars more for an Iron that takes replaceable Clad tips... it
will last you for years and years...

Something like this would do for all your electronics soldering..

WELLER 35-WATT PROFESSIONAL SOLDERING IRON, # WP35 on eBay.ca (item 370208634703 end time 24-May-10 15:36:36 EDT)

We use Weller Soldering stations in the shop and the Iron is similar
to the Iron in the link... The front has a knurled cap that holds the
replaceable Clad tips...
Our tips last about 1 year and we solder almost every day...
Don't forget to also buy some Flux Core Solder...

oh man, i will consider it tho, i dun really have the money, i am only a student as i just recently learned how to solder in school

i was hoping to spend less than 20 bucks
 
I would stick with Weller. They make pretty good soldering irons/accessories. And they have a wide variety of tips to choose from that will actually fit.

I looking to get a Weller station that has temperature regulation, and a desolder.
 
oh that 23watt weller seems reasonably priced for me

btw, in the past, i have had trouble keeping the tip clean. will any regular damped sponge work or steel wool
 
use a sponge, Using steel wool or copper i was told will take of the protective cladding on the tip of an iron.
Also that iron has no esd protection.
I also own 2 of them, They work well but they have no other tips for them. And dont grind them down that will ruin them.

This is very good same as the one above just different name
It is esd protection temp controlled and it is only a bit more, But it has tons of tips no matter what you want to do there is a tip for it.
I liked my weller till i used something just like this at my uni i have even taken it home a few times, its lots better, and worth the little bit extra money imo
