I'm sure one of the more experienced members could give a better and more detailed explanation on what it is and whys it's done, and they are welcome to do so.

You pretty much got it but a more simple explination would be that the "can" is a protective shield and window for the laser emitter located within the diode.

I have no idea how to do that and I have nothing to measure with as I just moved to a new apartment :yabbem:

I once had an oclaro build though and I'd say they have about the same divergence.

Could you give me an approximation? You can measure (or eyeball) the spot size at 20-30 feet and put it into an online divergence calculator. Just search google for "laser beam divergence calculator."

I have no idea if this was done right but I got a divergence of 4.356 mrads at 25 feet. ( That's like that farthest clear distance in my apartment right now)

I know it is pretty dang far from a pretty little dot but it is still slightly better than my old oclaro

Unfortunately I don't think I can buy this because I just had a diode blow up. If the diode is dead (and not the driver) I'll have to pay for that rather than this.

If not would you possibly take out the diode and driver and sell me just the housing?

Sorry I don't have a beam expander

I'm not sure I'd want to take it out myself but if you want to do that you can. I'm not really sure how these are put together and I don't want to risk breaking anything. Sorry
