Some of you may have read my recent review, but I spent more than 2 hours composing it and, just when I had nearly finished, my browser packed up and I lost the whole lot...:mad: :(

This has actually happened to me on a few occasions and I was curious to see whether others have experienced similar issues and might find the option of a "save draft" button helpful, especially when writing long posts or reviews?

If it seems popular, I'll ask Avery if he would mind and whether it will be feasible. :)

Well just for the peace of mind, it should be there, But if it isnt there i would just keep the whole text in a document..
 
I most definately would like this. It took me many hours to write up my pen tutorial and I had to start out writing it with a note saying that it will be a work in progress and the finished result will take awhile. Basically wrote it in real time saving over and over again so anyone looking at it would see it come to life instead of just throwing up a giant thread post all at once.
It was way too detailed and with a ton of pics to have things go wrong anywhere in the writeup process. It was totally exhausting but I had too many people who seemed to think it couldn't be done or wanting to know how to do it.
I've had that happen too grainde too many times and it discourages the whole process. I can't do a writeup without being detail oriented so my threads tend to be long.
 
^^ That's a save draft manual, sort of :D , Hope we could get autosave option.. The modern day browsers should be able to do this idk why they haven't addressed this as a part of browsing experience!
 
I did this too when I lost my thread. Id saved it in mail as a draft email - just quick and easy copy paste, but then 3 programs crashed; mail, photoshop and firefox! None of them would respond and I had to close them. If we had had an online option, it would have been safely saved in my account. Well provided the server doesnt go down!

I wont argue either, that it would also be a lot more convenient with a button beside the "preview" and "post" buttons... ;) :beer:

IMO I don't think it necessary.

Open Notepad, CTRL-C, CTRL-V :)

Save often.

Yeah... that what I do on some long Posts...
The trick is to save the Notepad file as you add to it.
Just leaving it in the Notepad page without saving your
work is looking for re-work if the program crash should
crash.


You can also go back to one of your very old posts and use
it as a Clipboard by Editing/Adding to it with your new Post.
But again this is only good if you save it once in a while as
you work on it.

Why not just have a test thread for this purpose, just save and edit as you go along ??
Then when it's ready for posting just copy and paste
 
Many vbull forums have a "prepare" section. This is a section where there are no editing restrictions. Your post is visible only to you. You can take hours, days weeks or more to create a kickass thread.
Once you are ready, you can ask moderators to move it to the relevant forum. Some forums allow you to move your thread yourself from this forum.

This kind of forum is easily created even in order versions of vbulletin.
Very handy.
 
Compared to some of the features we've asked for, this probably would require the largest software and database modification. Even if it's just a simple addon that's already available, he's likely not going to want to add it in, citing security reasons.

I'd just recommend using notepad.

EDIT: Jerry has a good point, that'd work well too. Especially if you use the built-in WYSIWYG editor. I manually do formatting when I compose in notepad so it's a little slow.

Only question is how you would access drafts. Is there a place for them?
 
Personally I would like the feature. I am in the dark however on what's involved in making it as I don't know a thing about programming.

I lost one thread to a browser crash and now I always type long posts (reviews, etc) in OpenOffice and copy them to the forum when I'm ready.
 
I had that experience several times, both here, and within our company crm.

As a result for anything longer I now tend to write it in notepad, or at least copy over to notepad every couple of paragraphs.

I'd love this feature, but it would probably be too much.

What I would love to see though, is different feature... when you hit preview, or post quick reply, show first any additional posts made in the interim while you were writing. It's annoying to write, hit post, and see that the same answer is already made.
