Should I get a G1 Glass lens for my SL-R?

Oh well. AixiZ website is malfunctioning, will not let me log on, will not let me shop; I clicked "forgot password", got the email with the new ISSUED password, tried that one, tried the old one... screwit. I invoked "Contact Us" on the website. Maybe I will hear from him. I've had a few frustrations this week, they are starting to mount up.

It's a shame you couldn't get the AixiZ site to work. I dealt with them two months ago: low prices and fast shipping. I got the shipment a couple of days later here in CA.

You can order the AixiZ red glass lens from a number of laser supply sites including HighTechDealZ and Modwerx. I've dealt with both: good vendors.

I wanted a more or less permanent focal setting (infinity: or longest reach) for my red lens.

1. Wrap the lens with one or two turns of teflon tape and install it with the lens spring.

2. Find your focal point and remember what it looks like. If viewing the spot close-up use laser goggles.

3. Looking at the screwdriver slot at the end of the lens, count the number of half-turns until the lens is unscrewed from the module.

4. Remove all of the tape and wrap it again: thicker this time. If you don't have that many turns to do you can cut the tape to 1/2 width with scissors if you wish. I wrapped with four turns of tape.

5. With four turns of tape my lens is so hard to turn that I didn't install the lens spring. It wasn't needed. That's one less thing to mess up light between the laser and the lens.

6. Tighten the lens to one half-turn less than you counted during removal.

7. Watch your laser spot and turn the lens in the smallest increments possible until you reach the focal point and no more. Do not turn backwards. The tape will keep a strong hold on your focal point unless you turn it backwards. Once you turn backwards on teflon tape you loose a lot of resistance and may as well start over.

Noted, thanks... there was stuff in the thread that is over my head and it isn't clear precisely what *I* would have to do (versus what jayrob provides). I'll wait and see what garoq has to say, re: more info on his G1 (or G1's, *IF* he has 2 versions).

What is it that you may not understand about jayrobs G1?
jayrob has been selling that lens for years, it is even less money then then the one sold at survivallasers 52 vs 99.

I love the g1 for red. I wish I could have one for all my red builds.

rpaloalto, thanks for posting the link. I've read a lot of posts about G-1 lenses (think maybe I've read them all) and that post features the best comparison of a G-1 to the AixiZ 3-element AR multi-coated glass 635nm-670nm.

I'm still not convinced that the G-1 may be the best red lens for every purpose.

LPM measurements will tell you which lens gets the most watts assuming each test was done with the same laser at the same distance from the LPM using the optimal output focus for watts from each lens. That result will tell you which lens provides the higher LPM reading and perhaps which lens is better for burning.

I think the jury is still out regarding which lens does the better job at producing a longer distance beam profile. I suspect an optical measurement would be best for that.

I don't have that much physics background but understand that multi-element lens formulas often provide superior focus to single element counterparts. If the laser is used primarily for pointing rather than burning, an optical test may prove interesting.

I'd suggest comparing the same laser using a measured spot size of X at 5 yards with each lens. Without refocusing, test the spot size at 150 yards with each and see what the results looks like.

Wish I had both lenses so I could try this myself.

There are other things we don't know about both of these lenses that could affect optical performance and beam profile. What type of glass is used? The very best optical glass is ED (extra low dispersion) glass. I don't think either lens uses ED glass.

What AR coatings are used? There are many kinds of optical coatings out there and the best are multi-coatings. Are all elements coated on all sides? Cheap optics can be touted as multi-coated but the inside element faces may not be multi-coated or not coated at all.
 
For that red build, you don't want a 405-G-1, but a 650-G-1 instead...

That's the best lens for red.

But that said, the AR coated acrylic is the best bang for the buck. It should be about 10% better than the standard AixiZ acylic lens.

And the 650-G-1 will be about 20% better than AixiZ acrylic. (back opened)

The 405-G-1 is the most power for blu-ray or 445, but with the multimode 445 diodes, which make a line instead of a dot, the AixiZ 445 3 element lenses will give a better looking dot. They 'clip' the line shorter. (at about 15% less output) Some who are after the max output power will still choose the 405-G-1 though...

Just to make sure jayrob does have 2 G1 glass lenses
The 405-445 G1, and the 650-G 1.

One of the things that bugs me the most about the aixiz is how far the lens sticks out at focus. I find that focusing at just 15 feet I need to unscrew the lens almost more then half, almost as if it's going to come out.

If your going to have just one nice red build, and you have the extra money, just go for it. You wont be disappointed.

I'm new to all of this, just joined the forum about a month ago; sometimes reading these threads can be overwhelming... new terminology, etc. For example, "Long Open Can". Soup? Sardines? How LONG has it been opened? Am I going to get salmonella? "Closed Can"; ok, that is alright as long as the shelf life hasn't expired... hehehe... get the idea?

Also... I DID read that thread already once, but missed the part about it being already mounted... just missed it, that's all... and I wasn't sure if I was going to have to try to shove a lens into a mount w/ my fat oily fingers. Re-read the thread, and now I understand.

As shown in my 660nm build thread, the AixiZ 3-element AR coated glass lens protrudes farther from the AixiIZ module than the AixiZ plastic lens when focused for long ranges. That's the way it is and if your build priority is finishing with a glow-in-the-dark silicon clicky lens cap rather than laser performance, you may be disappointed with this lens.

I already have another lens on order for this laser... It will most likely satisfy my goal. Thanks, though.
