Hi guys,

I was just wondering, if I offered a service to remove the can on any diode for a VERY (like one or two bucks plus shipping) reasonable price, would anyone be interested?

This would not be done with a dremel in my garage. It will be done with a tool specifically made, by a lab supply company, to remove the can from laser diodes. I would probably have some sort of guarantee as well. Something along the lines of: if something happens to the diode, I will replace it.

I'm sure this could increase the power in many of our diodes. I'm going to buy the tool, but it is a bit spendy so I'm trying to justify buying it.

Let me know!!

how much is a bit spendy? and I would probably spend a few bucks to take off the can if there was an advantage I never understood why if you take the can off of a closed can you improve it. open cans usually have a larger die I think maybe i'm missing something.

Usually people remove the can because they scratch the lens that comes with it. Or to get a little bit more light off their diode.

There can be a few reasons. You will get more output power. How much? No idea really, maybe 1mW - 20mW depending on the diode. I cant even begin to guess until I have done some tests, really. Another reason being if you break the window on your diode, or dislodge it some how, this will safely remove the can so you can get the potentially catastrophic fragments out of the way.

And hey, if it adds any power at all... why not, right?

Lets hear some opinions, good or bad. I'm thinking about buying this tool tonight so any input at all is appreciated.

Oh.. and the tool is like $150

The most practical reason to de-can LD's is holography use since it removes the primary source of intermodal noise.

Awesome! I know zilch about holography, but its good to hear this can be used for some practical applications.

And an update: I ordered this tool tonight, and will be making a post about it soon. Along with some tests of open vs. closed cans and power output.

coudl you take can off br diode?

Yup, any diode at all. As long as it has the 'can' on it, I'll be able to take it off without risking damage to the diode. 5.6mm, 9mm, pretty much anything that we use to DIY around here should be no problem at all.

I saw one of those the other day and wondered WTF. How would removing the enclosure increase the perceived power.

I've never seen or even heard of this tool before, but now I want one! ;D Could you please post a link to where you got it?
