Possibly, but you never know what the tuning of the second filter is... and you'd need a function in there to accept the lower power at the sensor... also, I don't know how accurate the sensor would be with low input... it would have to a measure of lasers 1W+ to get a reasonable and reliable measurement ;)

Remember also that the filter has to get rid of energy. At 10 watts --- POW :(
This is where the thermo style sensors start working for you.

yep, thats right, I seriously doubt it would take that without cracking or shattering... it was just a thought.

boy I donno if even the normal thermals will handle that. I've got a coherent that would probably get eaten by 10watts.

FWIW I just cracked my ND8 filter with the IR output of the rpl. Had it focused to a tiny tiny dot to meaure the output ( 2.8 watts 808 IR ) I heard a pop and it cracked it. so be careful and make sure if you are going high power that you diverge the light. If it's focused and the irridiance is too high, there's still the possibility of damaging the filters. It was scorching hot.

Daedal: do you have tony's info? I'm gonna have to get a new filter and possible have to send it back in to be recalibrated :(
 
oooh! ouch! I didnt plan on aiming anything over 1 watt at it... besides my 17w died. time to build a 60watt! :D

awww that blows aseras...maybe when you contact him you can see if he can possibly sell you a higher grade filter, that can take even higher powered lasers so people can do things like test the IR pump diode on their lasers. Might not be a bad investment. Hope everything turns out well with your LPM.

i wouldn't put 808nm through any sort of glass to measure it. quartz glass absorbs infrared, I don't know at what point that becomes significant, but I wouldn't ever try focussing 2.5W of IR onto a single point of glass.
 
The ND8 filter for this meter is made by Edmunds and are made for this specific purpose.

With higher powers, I try to adjust the focus so it's about a 1/8" dot to spread out the energy over the filter and sensor.
