sanwu spiker issues..........

To those who have been following this and have offered some very good advice , I wanted to post an update. Francis from Sanwu finally responded to my emails. I have been instructed to send the diode module and tailpiece/switch to someone in Spokane Washington for LPM testing. If it is 5W then he will ship me a 7W module and 7000 mW brass ring. I had actually considered contacting some members with LPMs and see if I could have this thing tested. I am considering doing what Francis suggested. I just ordered a cheap LPM from LPS and want to test it myself just to get a ballpark idea what the output power is of this thing. This host is used for several models starting from 1W or 1.5W to the 7W version with the only difference being the engraved brass ring indicating the power output. The rings are removeable and interchangeable so really any ring could wind up on any version. Thanks to GSS and paul for yall's suggestions for having someone here build me one and I am going to do just

Hello CeeKrr, if you return the laser module to us, we can even build you a 7.5W laser if you were looking for maximum output from the 7W model but that will be a peak output and our warranty will not apply to your laser once you receive the new 7.5W module.
 





CeeKrr, if it was Spokane Washington, it has to be Paul who offered to LPM it..:)
Still though I would of waited and saved just a couple dollars more and got a better LPM than the one on LPS. Laserbee's units are a top choice for a nice unit..
 
Hi, Peter. Spokane is in eastern Washington, I'm in Tacoma. That is right on Puget sound in western Washington. I would be happy to measure the output power of his laser, but it wasn't me they recommended. I really don't know who in Spokane this member might be.

Yeah, I agree on the LPS laser power meter. It is far too simple to be accurate, having only a TEC, pot, volt meter and LED. I wouldn't trust it to measure any laser accurately. I have real concerns it can even tell the difference between a 5 watt and 7 watt blue.

I would think at that high an output a true 5W for example on that "thing" might read 6W's with just the heat soak alone causing the OP to think it's a 7W unit that's under powered or even reading 7W thinking that this maby mistake 5W unit he received is really a 7W:rolleyes:
 
Yep. I have 2 LPMs that can measure a 7+ watt laser easily and accurately. My offer still stands.
 
Hi guys. Thanks for all the chat on this. Your input is greatly appreciated. I have decided to take my time and try to make a reasoned judgement as to what I actually have. Paul if your offer is still good, I just may be contacting you about accepting it in the next week or so. At this point I want to determine exactly which model of the striker/spiker I have. Since the same host is used for several models starting from I believe 1.5 to 7W, I thought the cheap meter would get me in the ballpark of knowing where I am. I still have a week or so before the meter arrives. If the laser tests down close to the 1.5w level then I will approach Sanwu for a refund/return since I paid for 7W. If it tests in the 5W range then I want a credit for the difference between the 5W and 7W and I will keep it. Of course if it tests well above 6W then no harm no foul, I will keep the laser. Maybe Sanwu will send me the 7000mW ring. I do believe that this is just a human error on Sanwu's part. But I really don't want to have to be mailing it all around the country to determine what power diode is in it. Sanwu has offered to replace the diode if necessary. But again that is after it is shipped to Washington and then possibly back to China. If it's 5W or better I'll keep it and buy a 7W or better from a vendor/builder here. So if Sanwu insists on a LPM test beyond mine then I just may be calling on Your generous offer Paul. Thank yall for your kind considerations.

Podo thank you for the response and generous offer. I do appreciate it. I'm ok with the 7W output. I'm just trying to verify exactly which diode is actually in the laser I received. Since the host is used for so many different power ratings I want to make sure I didn't pay for a 7W model but got something possibly substantially less. I've decided that if it is at least 5W, then I'll keep it and request an adjustment/credit. Of course if it 6.5W or higher, it's all good and I'll keep it and ask Sanwu to send the 7000mW ring. I really like the build and heft of the laser. I like it, I just want what I paid for.

Hello paul and thank you for your reply and input. It is interesting and I do have a basic, rudimentary understanding that there are many factors controlling the actual output power of the diode. I appreciate Your explanation of some of those factors. Let me ask you, paul, is there any actual physical difference in the appearance of a 5 watt diode and a 7watt diode in its copper jacket/housing? According to Sanwu they can tell me if the diode in my laser is 5 or 7 watts based on the appearance of the front plate and aperture of the diode. I paid for a 7 watt version but received a version that has a brass ring that states 5000mW. So they are not sure if I got a 7 watt laser pointer in a 5000mW host or if I got a 5 watt laser diode in a 5000 mW host. This host can be ordered with several choices of diodes with the only difference being the markings on the brass ring which is removeable. Anyway I'm trying to determine whether I got what I paid for. Sanwu sent me a photo and said this is what the 7 watt diode looks like and said that the 5 watt looks totally different. From what I can tell it pretty much looks like just about every diode I've seen from that perspective. So I was wondering if there is any way to distinguish diode model from a photo? I would appreciate any input you may have. I tried sending the photo Sanwu sent of the 7 watt diode but had some trouble. I'm going to try again. Thanks.

Hiya, this is probably a dumb question. Do you have access to a laser meter? You could simply test to see if the output is around or above 7w. I built a 5W using a diode capable or 5.5w but only get 3.5w due to the driver or powersupply. A 5W laser may have a diode capable of 7w but simply turned down or detuned so to speak. Interested in your outcome...
