I agree. In general, I think 'pointers' >250mw are an exceedingly bad idea to be available to the general public. At least when people build one themselves, they will (hopefully) in their learning, come to realize and respect the dangers associated with them and the hazards they pose to life, limb, and property.

I just bought the two sonars. the E3 elite lunar is listed in my invoice as solar_elite. and the S1 sonar lunar is listed as sonar_extreme. the E3 is 100mW and the S1 is 200mW.

When they had the S1 listed, the specs said 300-400mW. i emailed them and asked it if it was 200mW (as listed in the drop down), 300 or 400. they said the 300-400 was a mistake and they changed it.

hey plexus.. what kind of shipment did you use? a dhl/ups fast shipment?

please review the 2 bluray lasers you bought..... they have good price :)
and small initial beam diameter....of 1mm. i would know if it is TRUE!
but.....why did you order both items? just buy the 200mw version......... 100mw are quite impossible to see(beam). i have an olike 90mw and i see the dot very bad. i cannot see it over 50.. 100 meter. maybe 200mw are better..... i hope you will receive an overpowered laser... like 220....240mw...ask the test at WL before shipment

It seems this is buy worthy. Can you build a 405nm 200mW laser for $90 or less?

Jayrob pocket mini kit = $40
SF-AW210 diode = $12
Flexdrive = $23
AixiZ 405 glass lens = $12
Battery = $2

Total = $89

Plus:
it will be a smaller laser,
you will actually know what the output is,
it will be focusable,
you will have built it yourself,
you will be able to repair it.

Peace,
dave

True, and you can probably built it cheaper with a rckstr and maybe a cheaper host/heatsink... but still, a nice WL Sonar for $89 iss a nice deal, esp. if you're not the best builder. Personally I would have a lot of fun w/ the Sonar cases if they were still available. I never got a chance to get my hands on one back when WL used to sell empty cases. :/

I didn't say that the Sonar was a bad deal. I just answered the question "Can you build a 200mW violet laser for $90?"

I also KNOW, that my own builds have higher quality control than WL's ;)

Peace,
dave

OK, so I going to go ahead and buy it no regrets.

I can build flashlights, but I can't build lasers.

I don't really understand that logic. Laser diodes are little different from LED's. they're just more picky about ESD and what current levels you drive them at. And most people here put them in flashlight hosts, so i'm not really sure what difference there is between building a flashlight with a normal LED, or one with a laser diode. It's not like you'd have to do any machining. There's a whole slew of people here who offer custom heatsinks, plus more than a few who sell whole kits as well. daguin listed one already. Jayrob's pocket mini. But there are others of varying sized and prices.

If you really want the wicked, then by all means get it. but if you can build flashlights, then you CAN build lasers. ;)

Oh OK. I was under the impression that there was custom heatsinking to do. Well if its as simple as you say it is, I might give it a try. But i'm still going to buy the WL.

There is heatsinking involved. But the kits offered by members here will have the ones you need. Plus there are a few members who will make you almost almost any kind of heatsink you need for almost any host.

I have the capabilities as well... but i'm not sure I really want to try and compete with flaminpyro and the other established members who offer the service.
