I think the main reason that it uses D batteries is because of the fact that it's being marketed mostly to the US and Canada which use these cells as a standard, that way you don't have to go track down batteries. And making them easy to find and affordable. I mean, who can say they have 18650s in common items? You can't buy them at a wal-mart as far as I know, and if you're out doing a tower alignment or something all you gotta do is go buy more a block down the road. Usually unless their a laser or flashlight enthusiast, people have probably never heard of an 18650 or a 26650
That and the D cells total up to far more current/capacity than the li-ions. Same thing I suspect with the Aries laser, using C cells instead of an 18650.
