RELIEF

That's the plan. I've ordered the batts from DX, they'll be here in 2 weeks or so :)

At least the RPL-300 is working fine, something to play with for the 2 weeks.

Just did a few tests with the meter. RPL-300 only lasts about a minute before the protection circuit shuts it down, which is a lot less than I expected... especially with a heatsink that big.

But more importantly, it nicely averages over 300mW during that time. So when the RPL-400 does get all fixed up, this'll be a pretty nice deal for someone to pick up ;)

I'll do a full review on the RPL-300 tomorrow, or maybe the day after. Since it's after exams, people will be allowed back on the roof, and I'm sure you'll want to see some nightly shots on top of a 10 storey building at night ;) Especially since it's the tallest building for kilometres ;)

Hi Murudai,
I know you didn't buy your RPL directly from Optotronics, but if it's an Optotronics RPL, I can give you a detailed history as much as I can if you email me the serial number/numbers.

Take care
Jack

Thanks, that's really helpful :)

Serial number is 70460, if you happen to see this post first :)

ooh tell us the history whem jack gets back to you :P We want too hear it too, we also want to see some nice beam shots !

Done some more testing. The RPL-300 seems to average around 250mW, so that sounds like a battery thing. At least it's stable.

But unfortunately the RPL-400 is all over the place, and rarely averages more than 190mW. And this is with the original battery that the product came with, so somethings up.

My underpowered WL is more reliable than this one, and that just doesn't sound right at all, so I'm returning it to get it fixed up. Shame, all this worry about whether it will arrive in time and now I have to ship it back :(

Ah, the RPL-300 had flattish batteries, all that RPL testing :) Charged them up again and after it's warmed up a bit it averages around 320mW, which is nice. Over it's duty cycle it hovers between 290 and 320mW, but that's probably more because my hand was shaking a bit :)

Unfortunately the duty cycle is only about 45 seconds though. No idea why, it just seems to cut out after around 45 seconds. Aren't the RPLs meant to stay on for like 5 minutes before cutting out?

Well, my RPL-300 certainly ain't doing anything like that, lol. Maybe new batteries will fix it up.

RPL-400 would cut out quickly as well, but that ones going to get serviced anyway so I can make sure then that it's up to scratch.

At the moment it outputs 190mW for a minute then cuts out. If it can be fixed so that it outputs 400mW for 5 minutes I'd be VERY happy :)

Ah, I will try for that tomorrow ;)

Don't have to worry about it yet, since I'm just exporting lasers at the moment, but I'll look into it. Only thing better than doing illegal things is doing illegal things legally :D

Thanks for that link, el-taco.

I decided not to import a laser before the ban. There are new laws making *possession* illegal in nsw... it's already controlled nationwide by some radiation act. So I'm going to wait and see if these laws are actually going to be enforced. I'll give it a year and if it seems okay I'll get one.

So yeah. That link may come in handy :)

Actually it only depends on the laws of the country you live in, so possesion is not controlled or illegal, sales/importation are.

ohh you said nationwide :D my bad , sorry thought you said worldwide, never had my glasses on ;)

If murudais application goes well, all the other australian hobbyists can apply to !
