Greetings fellow plebeians of the forum,
I was biking home from school today when I feasted my eyes upon the mother of all manly televisions. This was no ordinary specimen, and I could tell that it would find my garage to be a cozier home than the curb. Nevertheless, I called up some local friends to transport the beast 330 feet down the street to my garage. Here she is boys!

Surprisingly, I couldn't find a model number on the unit. Using estimation techniques, I measured the screen to be about 65" diagonal. At first I was uncertain whether the sucker was a rear projection or perhaps a CRT (I'm not too familiar with my TV's), but upon inspection and a little research, my answer was quite clear.

So, my question to you guys is:
Is there anything I should be cautious about when opening it up?

Yeah..... The High Voltage... it has a nasty bite...

well for one thing dont even open it up while plugged in and you can still get bit very hard after unplugging TVs too, if you are not careful. That is a RPTV- it has some monster lenses in it (and take care opening some of them as they contain a clear oil(mineral)) that will get all over your floor. The speakers in the bottom may be useful.

Also you will find either a plastic or glass 'mother of all' FS mirrors. I have a mirror like the one in yours--It hangs over my waterbed.

I put a sticker in one corner that reads: 'Objects in mirror are bigger than they appear'

Thanks for the input guys! Love the sticker hak. Tomorrow I'm going to begin the dissection process, so hopefully everything will go according to plan.
Although I have no plans on opening it up while powered, I just want to make sure that there isn't something specifically that I must not touch. Yes, I'm familiar with capacitors and the such, but not with high voltage.

Be extremely cautions of those thickly insulated anode wires. Even if powered off for days, the tubes by still hold a charge that can give you a nasty jolt.

As far as testing it goes: are you even sure its defective? People throw these things out just because they want a flat tv, even if they're still working. If its still operation it would be a nice thing to have provided you have the space to put it.
 
I recently took apart a rptv like this one and the mirror was made up of a mylar sheet streached across a woden frame like a skinny picture frame ?

good advice from ben- i assumed you would hook up a dvd player and try it out. For one thing- you can get all the not working ones you would ever want for free. ask at any tv repair shop--I have passed up some as the three I dissected are enough-- already. One I have came in a nice real wood cabinet-(oak I think) too nice to toss out- makes a nice tv cabinet once all the guts were removed.Folding doors on the front.

WTF---your not serious are you?/ I see little similarity between the two in the overall looks.

Three RGB lenses- FS mirror= RPTV--what would you call lenses the size of coffee cans?? Looks like three small CRTs each making a diff color thru the lenses off the mirror and onto the screen from the rear-R P T V. I guess the oil is there as a coolant.

CRT - one big tube -no lenses.. no mirror no rear projection screen.
 
Hey guys,
To answer your question before, I am 99% sure the TV is inoperable. There are several cables unplugged and it seems like there is no power supply board!
Upon a closer look inside, everything is as expected. There are three large projection lens assemblies, a colossal front surface mirror, speakers, etc.

The plastic FS mirrors are as light as a big feather. The lenses are pretty cool but large and heavy. take precautions if you plan on detaching them from the frame/etc so you dont get the oil inside all over yourself and your floor.
