Red DIY DVD laser burner.

Maybe for my next project I will get the silver. The only reason I used the ceramic is because it was laying around here doing nothing...lol. It still helps a bunch.

I definitely will need to get the thermal epoxy eventually...I have read nothing but good things about it.

Well, I have some silver solder, maybe I should be using it instead of rosin core solder?

Wow, I can't believe I totally missed your post. I mostly use the ceramic as I used to do computer stuff and have tons of it laying around from processors. I actually found the Arctic silver at my local staples! Man after reading up on that stuff I started using it for my computer procs as well.

Silver solder is better in only two aspects. 1. it's harder to break the contact once set. 2. provides better electrical connection than basic rosin core solder.

Hi Kenom,
It's ok. I miss stuff all the time..lol. BTW, we had a storm last night and I was able to shine my red DIY through the rain. The effects are neat and sparkly, just like you described.

Well guess what? I don't know if you saw my thread in the "Other" section. But to make a long story short, I ordered a spare motherboard last Oct. Due to a lightening strike, I have had to pull it out. Inside the box it was shipped in is a brand new tube of Arctic Silver 5! It is a very small tube, but I know there will be lots left over for future diode projects.

Rock on! I love it when mobo manufacturers use AC for thier processors. It's the best stuff hands down. Unfortunely I had to PAY for mine :P. LOL Glad to hear you got your hands on some of it.

I had to pay for mine too...ha..ha. I thought the ceramic was what I ordered when I ordered the motherboard. I can't remember where the ceramic came from. Anyway, it was a nice surprise. My computer is happy again, and I am sure it will be happier with Arctic 5. I will be using it from now on in laser projects too.

so would this work for the diodes that senkat is having a group buy for at tha moment and how about the job you did with the minimag

The GB diodes would most definitely work with this mod, and the mini-Mag mod is where you simply use 2 pins from regular LED's soldered to the base of the LD and connect the LD right onto the batteries. This provides you with direct contact but would give you quicker deaths and I personally advise against it.

Hope that helps;

I have my Mini Dorcy ready to go, and just for the heck of it I checked the voltage at the head.

Now the battery is a Lith CR123, and it is 3.11 volts on my meter.

When I read the voltage at the head it is stepped UP to 5.09 VOLTS..

Isn't that Instant death for one of these DVD Burner Diodes???

Try to put some load on the head. Maybe place a few ohm resistance in there and see how it goes. :) I'm sure your numbers will change after... ;)

Thanks...

I'm going to try and wedge a capacitor and resistor in there to protect the Diode...
Any thoughts on where to start for values for the capacitor and resistor??

I don't have a part number for my diodes, but they came out of new LG 20X DVD Burners (P/N GSA-H55NK).
It is an Open Diode.

Thanks Again

If you are using a Dorcy Mini, then you do not need a resistor. Just add a capacitor and you should be set.

Anything should be fine. The standard seems to be 47uF though. Try to get something with a useful voltage rating. Refer to my post right under this one for further information.

16v  47UF or bigger :-) Radio shack sells the tantalum caps in a little blister pack for about $1.29 I believe...No, it does not have to be tantalum, you can use the electrolytic as well :-)

Uhhhggghhh

I HATE RADIO SHACK!!!!

Nothing even close at either of the Radio Shmuck Stores near me!

I hate to order a couple lousey Caps from DigiKey!

I've started looking through some old boards to see if there is something in that range I can Scrounge!

Larry

Really sorry to hear that Larry... What adds to the whole pain of ordering from DigiKey is that if your order is less than $25 then you have to pay $5 for nothing! I try to bunch up my orders and make big orders all at once, and it's worked out so far... I really hate that little surcharge they add there... >:(
