Reasons for getting a 5mw blue laser pointer ?

Are you north of the Arctic Circle ? If so I'm sure that would have both it's pros and cons, the 6 months of night would make for a lot of outdoor star pointing with lasers though :D

I live in Helsinki, quite north but not enough to have only night or only day periods :) But yea in the wintern most of the time is dark. The sun stays up from about 9-10am to 4pm but theres always too much clouds to see any stars :p

I guess you have to plan your star pointing for the nights it is supposed to be clear.

I checked your local forcast, as of today they are calling for partly cloudy today followed by 9 days with clouds and rain and/or snow -

Intellicast - Helsinki Weather Report in Finland

I guess you can still have fun shining a laser beam thru the snow while waiting for the clear nights for star pointing !

"365nm, 325mw. 99$"

"NCSU033A is around for years already, 250mw output."

"Here's a pic of some fluorescein glowing in a "flashlight" with a 250mW Nichia 365nm LED"

there are people making UV 250mw maglites out there.

edit: btw: 365nm isn't carcinogenic (UV-A) something below 360 is :)

Those are LEDs, not laser diodes. Not the same.

Yes, moderate exposure to UV-A is normally not considered carcinogenic, but melanoma and burns are possible.
There are other dangers with short wavelength light, too. They can affect the photo-receptors in your eye and damage your vision as well as cause a yellowing of the cornea and damage to the lens.

Bin at wlasers is very nice, respondes to emails very quickly and is very quick to help with exchanges. Last week I bought a pointer from him and the AAA battery just wouldn't come out. I emailed him, sent him a picture of the problem and he said no problem. Yesterday I just received my brand new replacement. How's that for good customer service? And we're talking about cheap stuff here (not quality-wise, I mean $$). I had to pay for my shipping to return the broken unit but he lives in the states so it was only like $1.75.

I have ordered 4 lasers from Bin, great price and fast shipping. I haven't had any problems with any of them. I always try to buy from sellers in the US. Once I find seller I stick with them and refer other people to buy from them as well.

Yep, even though this is my first order from him and I have not got the item yet so I can't comment on the product itself at this time, I can say he is very good about replying to emails quickly AND shipping quickly - I placed an order thru his Ebay store on Sunday and the tracking number I got and later checked said it was shipped on Monday the very next day, so it seems likely I will have it by the end of this week, and after the very long wait I previously had for stuff from Hong Kong that would be a very wecome difference indeed ! :D

(a side thought the 5mw blue laser has started me researching is considering getting (if I can find something worth getting within my modest budget) is a fairly good portable UV light for searching for rocks and minerals that fluoresce under blacklight, so far it seems that the shortwave units are best for that but they tend to be very costly so I am hoping to find an inexpensive good deal somewhere)

I think you will be happy with your laser that you ordered, my shipment only took 4 days. So depending on where you live you should have it by Friday, Saturday at latest.

This is a great deal.

I bought 5 for "stocking stuffers" for $8 ea. They arrived in 5 days including the Veteran's day holiday. All were between 35 and 50mW.

Remember these are powerful enough to damage your eye with a direct hit, so be careful

Yep, it arrived Friday and I am very happy with it, I'll post a review on it later :D

I don't have a meter to test the power, but I can say I am pleased with it, an amazing deal for such a low price ! :D

I had thought people just used the colors blue and violet interchangably when describing lasers, especially since wlaser advertised the laser I bought as a "Blue Purple Violet" laser (even though they did a typo and violet was mispelled as Violate).

I'll have to research that when I have time to see if there are different lasers both violet and blue or if they are all actually violet and just are sometimes called blue.
