Reasonable alternatives for 1-cell (boost) builds?

It seems like for 1-cell 445 or 405 builds, Microboost and Flexdrive are it, as far as drivers go.

But what about something like this:

Could you run two of those in parallel and drive a 445 at 1A ?
Suppose I didn't *quite* need the ridiculously small footprint of Dr. Lava's drivers?

I know ~$14 for two of ^ vs $23 for a Microboost / Flexdrive isn't a huge savings, but money is money, and it seems like there are strangely few options :undecided:
 





$7 vs $23 is indeed a good savings, being less than a third the price of a microboost. Nothing says you need to use those drivers. There are other alternatives like what 3zuli linked to. The key is just finding one that can supply the necessary voltage and be current regulated. Some day I'd like to see how well a Joule Thief works for this.
 
I wonder if a Joule Thief would be able to supply the relatively high current required? And would it be smooth enough for a laser diode?
 
AMC7135 do not boost, they are a current sink which means they're like a valve regulating how much flows out a drain. I'm not sure if the Joule Thief even regulates current. You'd probably need to put in some sort of regulator yourself which kind of makes it like the professional boost circuits, only more poorly regulated and probably a lot more flickery.
 
Limitations of the NJG-18 circuit board . . . .,

the D1 SS14 Schottky diode is rated for 1 amp maximum average current.

That means for reliable operation, the LD output should be no more than 1000ma.

(Original circuit design was 700ma output)

I hope that saves some LD's.
