there will be NO ir filter to remove from a cheap ebay pen. and some can have as much as 70% of output being ir. mW per mW 405nm will burn better, more energetic photons you know.

so what you're saying is that lasers WITHOUT an IR filter tend to have a greater burning capability?

Yes :)

Without an IR filter more light is allowed to pass through the aperture which increases the output.

For example:

532nm(W/Filter)
1064nm---808nm---532nm(only 532nm light)

532nm(Without Filter)
1064nm----808nm---532nm(532nm+IR Light outputted)

well....yes there is more total radiation coming out. it's just that some or even most of it is invisible - and that is a Bad thing.

Well, if you want to burn things on the cheap, probably the best bang for your buck would be a red
diode extracted from a DVD burner sled. They are more difficult to find and can cost more when found,
but if you can get a "dead" 12X Blu-Ray burner drive it will give you three really nice diodes (or possibly
2 diodes, one of which will be a dual). That would be the best option by far, as you might be able to
squeeze upwards of 900mW out of the violent diode, depending on how you play it.

Now don't forget your safety glasses. For a 660nm red, there is no substitute for the Eagle Pair sold by
Survival Laser that doesn't cost significantly more. None of the other "cheap" safety glasses have a
good chance of working, even if they claim to be Eagle Pair, as there are a lot of fakes out there.
Otherwise if you don't take our advice, then, well, just keep reading down to the bottom of my sig.
