None what so ever. If you get the hubsan i can tell you how to calibrate it with a stick positioning. There are like 12 hubsans it seems now. Lol. Even one with fpv! But that's pricey. The protox has fantasticly bright leds on it so you know which way it's facing. Real really bright for its size. Hubsans has two dim blue leds so you can get lost as to you heading some time. Hubsan arms are plastic and snap together. Can be repaired with glue or tap if you break one. Though I don't see that being a flight mishap as so much the dog tried to eat it. I have plowed mine into the concrete outside and just digs. Protox arms are PCB!! The frame itself is printed circuit and motors bolt to that. So if you break something like that you're screwed. If I had to choose between the two I would have to go hubsan. But it is a really close call for me. Pm me if you want any other info or pictures.
 





@Sigurthr. The quadcopter that Things has on the first page is a mega quadcopter from JayCar that is 430mm in length and width for $150. Things said that it has a decent payload and Jaycars website says that it has a vertical and horizontal range of 100m. Although I think Jaycar is an Australian company so I'm not sure if you could get it or not

@Things. Do you think that the Mega quadcopter is a good buy for the price and do you think that it's a good first quadcopter that will last a hard landing or two? I'm still debating whether or not I should get into the quadcopter scene. Like Sigurthr I had an IR copter that lasted a few days a couple of years ago and would like to get a nice one.

From the look of it I'm thinking of getting the Hubson x4 for indoor flight and the Mega quadcopter from jaycar for outdoors. We live on a farm and there's plenty of acres to play around with :)

Yeah, for $150 it's pretty good, and they're quite durable. Definitely great for learning on. No way I would have gone to an expensive multicopter before trying one of the cheap ones first. The flight time isn't great, but you can stick a larger 2S LiPo on it if you want.

However, before you walk out of the store with it, see if you can just test that it works properly first. From my experience with working there, you'd occasionally get bad batches which would basically burn themselves out the second you connected the battery. If it flies fine, then it should be good.

Note though that with ALL quadcopters, you need to "arm" them on a perfectly flat surface, since they calibrate their accelerometers to that. If you arm them on a slope, they'll tend to want to fly off in that direction. You can trim it out if it's only a small drift, but a large drift it's best to just land it, and unplug the battery/plug it back in/ re-arm on a flatter surface etc.
 
See that's what I'd be worried about ordering a no name brand one. There's no stores here with any RC stuff so there's no way I could test it. While the jaycar quad looks great I'd get murdered in shipping.

Hopefully I have a decent tax return and I can grab a really nice one if I get a cheap indoor flyer for my birthday.
 
Ooh sweet. Mode 2 is left stick for throttle and yaw, with right stick for roll and pitch right? If so that's what I prefer.

I don't like the Tx that quad comes with, is there a BNF version? I hate spring loaded throttle. Also, that Tx has a fake antenna like the cheaper Hubsans. I don't know much about the Tx and Rx units on the market, so I'd be a little lost trying to pair things up well.

As of right now after doing a looooooot of reading and asking around I'm leaning towards a Hubsan H107D FPV as it has the best mix of Tx/Flight time/self-hover and has lag-free FPV to boot. Plus the video rec is done at the Tx and not at the quad.

I was going to pick up a Proto X to learn on but after learning the advertised flight time of >8min (with some retailers saying 15min!) is a lie I won't be getting one.

I'd be interested in this if I knew how to pick and pair a good Tx / Rx combo. Just need mode 2 with no spring on throttle. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/...er_with_Motor_ESC_Flight_Controller_PNF_.html

I'm not really liking the look of the included TX either, but it's as simple as just buying a TX/RX you do like and swapping it out. I have the Turnigy 9x myself and love it, and it's cheeaaappp. TX and a RX is like $60, then $8 for additional receivers.

And yeah, that's the right mode.
 
Is the throttle on your Turnigy 9x "normal" (when you let go it stays where you put it) or like these weird ones which spring back to center?

Hrmm, you've got a point there about swapping the Tx/Rx. If you don't mind me imposing, could you link an applicable mode-2 Tx and Rx to go with the SK450 (or the IFLY-4)?
 
The turning is the same as mine and the throttle is the standard stay where you leave it.

May need battery connectors on either your lipo or copter so they match. I'm running the connectors or deans. A lot of lipos are coming with bullet connectors and most recently vehicles I have seen don't use those.
 
In the vid it shows the copter uses XT60 connectors and the battery page shows the same connector listed and pictured, I checked that =). Picked out an applicable balancing charger too.

I saw a 5000mAh lipo but it used giant bullet connectors so I didn't select it.

If the parts list in my last post is right I can get a really nice quad for under $350 this way.
 
You can solder on new connectors :) I'm running 5Ah 3 cells. May run both in parallel for 25 min flight time :) yup. All that will get you flying. Though I would recommend adding some props to that list :)
 
Yeah I run 3S 5Ah packs as well, they came with bullet connectors. Easy to swap over with a high powered or gas soldering iron :)

XT60's are my fav connector.
 
Awesome! I've never had a connector that solders on, but my iron can handle 10ga copper so should be fine for the job. How hard could it be, right?


Btw what's the range on the turnigy 9x Tx?


Oh and I may grab a 10Watt 2.4ghz linear amplifier, since I am licensed, hehe.

Before it goes out of range you won't be able to see the copter. I've had mine out to about a quarter mile but turned back because my fpv feed was getting grainy. 5.8ghz blows :(
