Okay, given that D cells are 1.5V each, I'd need a boost driver to run a M140 diode.

Correct, or you use lithium D-cells (32600s)

Yea, I may just go with a spacer tube for 18650's.

Lithium 32650 are expensive, but they last forever. I have a led voltage monitor on my maglite that turns 5 colors and I've never seen it any other color than blue (full)
The fei longs are around 5000-6000 mah from what's the I've been told from testing.

We can do 26650's but not 18650's.

One more question, you said in an earlier post that you could indeed make a tube to fit 18650 batteries in this host and then later you say only 26550's .Can you do 18650 tube for this host?

We thought we could do 18650 but the spring on the maglite is too large to properly contact, so 26650 only.
