I am the proud new owner of an argon, but I want to know if it'll trip my breaker, which is a 15amp one. Head 2201RD-40MLA made June 1998, Power supply 2101-40MLA made May 1993
I plan on running it below 10 amps, how many amps will the ps consume?
 





I believe mine draws about 11 Amps full go. I haven't tripped a breaker yet with my 40 mW.

If you havwe 240V single phase then it'll be at about 7A full pelt. I managed to run my scanner set, and argon (10.25A tube current), a smoke machine (700W) and a bench PSU all under 13A.
 
:-))))) 13 Amps at 240 VAC is like 26 Amps here in the US.... We need more power -- Three phase to the populace !!!!

It does 41mW @ 7amps, which is the max it'll go when I turn up the pot on the ps, how do I get it to 10A? Also: will I need additional cooling?
 
My Omni 532 argon draws about 17 amps at maximum power, puts out 40mW. I had to install a 20 amp circuit in my basement just for it!

You aren't supposed to run them for long at 10A, shortens the life span of the tube, I think I ran mines with around 90CFM air flow at 10.25A and it would do maybe 6 or 7 minutes before the thermal interlock kicked in.When the thermal interlock kicks in you've went too far :p It'll run indefinatley at 8A though.

What value of pot are you using ? I used a 10K pot with mines, 5K wouldn't work.

WHAT!?! Nononono, thats not how it's done ! You use the DB25 connector on the front to control current and monitor it !!! Shoot me a PM with your e-mail and I'll send you some manuals !
 
Just realised you're not using the 2214-40MLA power supply, and that you're using the 2101 , which IIRC uses the round connector for control. You will find the pin outs for that on Sams Laser FAQ in the Argon/Krypton power supply schematics section.
 
I;ll post some info here in a few minutes on how to wire in a pot for current control. it should do over 100mW at 10A :evil:
 
There is a complete copy at LaserFX Copy of Cyonics/Uniphase Model 2001 Argon Ion Laser Systems Manual but here is the basic remote panel, equivalent to the one for the 2114, below.
  • Laser output power control: Pin 5 is source+, pin 1 is source- (source ranges from 0 to 10 VDC). The sensitivity is 0.1 V/mW. Current control and local control shunts must be removed for power control to be active.
  • Laser current control: Pin 6 is source+, pin 1 source- (source ranges from 0 to 10 VDC). The sensitivity is 0.5 V/A.
  • Laser output power monitor: Pin 29 to pin 30, 0.1 V/mW.
  • Laser current monitor: Pin 26 to pin 27, 0.1 V/A.
  • Local control shunt: Pin 13 to pin 12 (enables pot on front panel for light mode).
  • Current control shunt: Pin 15 to pin 14.
  • Laser standby, discharge on: Pin 34 to pin 35 (allows laser to only run at idle current, about 4 A).
  • Interlock: Pin 36 to pin 37.
  • Laser shutdown: Pin 33 to pin 35 (disables discharge, cathode remains on).
  • External power supplies: Pin 25 is +15 VDC, pin 24 is -15 VDC, pin 23 is return.
  • Power ground: Pin 4.
