Chris -- I agree that the head coil tuning might help but I have to get the PWM under control to limit heating so I have time to tune.
Also, I have to get the power down so I don't burn my power sensor heads.

So, for the all in one kit, is it completely ready to use?
I am very interested in acquiring one of these.
Is the PWM to cycle the laser on and off, or what is it for?

Comidt:
The priceing on page one (US$300+shipping) is for one lasertube and the driver for it. What you will have to aquire yourself is a PowerSupply that suits your countrys "wallplug-Voltage" and can output about 30V (stableised) and about 15Ampere.
The PWM is for adjusting the power to the laser, however it seems you could use it as an on/off switch by just applying about 5V on the PWM input for full power and 0V for no power. I don't think it is recomended, though. I seem to remember reading (scan back and read the entire thread) that 95% dutycycle is the best choice and not the 100% that you get when simply applying 5V.

Comidt, thanks for the compliment on my laser box :) Ive been running about 4 volts into my pwm with a wall type power supply. and for the main amp{power supplyer} to the laser I run 30 volts 13amps thats what its drawing so like Tottish said 15 amp power supply would be perfect and 28 t0 30 volts and youll be burning holes in all kinds of stuff including your thumbs lol ;D

I can get a power supply pretty easily.
I have read the thread and saw the dutycycle info. Would it be possible to purchase one of your controllers Tottish? They look good.

So is this the TTL thing found on labbies and laser show type lasers?

How powerful are these lasers actually, I know they're around 10W? I have fiddled with 200mW Greenies before and they really aren't that powerful. I don't want to buy this laser FOR burning things, rather to learn and investigate more, but it would be nice to be able to burn a few things when needed :)
What kind of things can you burn/ puncture?

Is there anywhere I can go to read up more about RF excited lasers? I've read most of Sam's Laser FAQ, but there wasn't too much on RF lasers. I just like to know about things before using/ buying them.

This would represent a 100% duty-cycle. The picture on my Oscope on the previous page represents about 50%. Look up PWM on Wikipedia and you'll get the hang of it.
About the PWM-module; Just talk to Chris (heruursciences) about it and he'll hook you up with one. That goes for all you guys who want one. Chris handles the US-distribution of the modules so talk to him about it.
I can't help you with your other queries since I'm pretty much a newbie on this laser-stuff. :)

I have a small understanding of PWM's but I'll go and read up on it.
Could this laser be used for engraving? Also, would I need to get a collimating lens if I wanted to use it over a greater distance, or is the divergence not too bad?

Since most of the units seem to be 10W+ you should be able to do some simple engraving with it. Wattage-requirements for diffrent kind of material-processing is listed at Sams laser FAQ. If you want to use it for engraving you would need a focusing lens. Talk to Chris about it and he'll hook you up with a ZnSe-lens.

Earlier in this thread I'm pretty sure someone measured a 30% bigger dot at 7ft so the spreading is not too bad depending on what you are comparing it to, of course.

Heuur: I have another model of Synrad RF-excited laser (48-1) that outputs 16W and draws about 7A at 30V. Is that just a more efficient design or is yours out of tune (retunable?) or has been used and lost some of its power?

Synrad 48 and firestar series laser are excited directly by an internal antenna, so the RF feild doesen't have to penetrate a thick dielectric tube, that alone saves about 25% on energy cost. They also run at a higher frequency of 48mhz and that helps the gas ionize easier too. Also thay have a resonant H bridge antenna circuit that creates a quadrapole discharge field that causes a near uniform glow discharge in the bore, as well as other tricks such as a unique gas mixture and excellent heatsinking...

In short those synrad black box lasers are a lot more efficient... and expensive...

ok, I just tried out my 18650gr pack, it is 8 x 18650gr cells in series, I dont know if these are in sad shape, or if this is typical of these cells, but with the pack at 31v, when I fire the system up, it draws 5 amps, (300ma on standby) and the voltage dropped to 18v!! ;D :o It still burns, and works at this low level which really is surprising! :o I guess Ill have to use those gel cells after all... :(

Disma -- are those protected cells? I've heard that those cells can output more. Not sure if I believe that.
You need much more than 5 amps. I'm surprised you get some burn.

ya, they are protected, I was hoping it would at least do 8 or 9 amps... oh well :(

D -- You may need 16 cells series / parallel. I don't know what the protection circuit can do. I'm still working on the RF part. And recoating my burned out sensor heads :D
