405 is violet not blue. You will not see much of a beam and the spot will not be bright.
That is normal.
To really see the beam and a bright spot you need tio go up to 445+ blue or 532 green.

Yupp what Lethere said, it's violet don't expect a good visible beam. Get a green one instead.

Even though it is hard to see the beam if it is really putting out close to the 200mW it is supposed to put out then it should be able to burn something, have you tried to do this yet ???

Oh, and you bought the wrong batteries. Look at the two different numbers. That should give it away.
Thats the same module in the Ebay pens we have been buying for anyone who didnt notice.

Try focusing the dot as small as you can on a piece of paper with some dark writing on it(like a newspaper). If it is near the stated output it should burn newspaper pictures and printings easily.. I also agree with above statements on the wavelength. 405nm is essentially what one would call black light or UV(near UV at least). You will not see it well alone but a good way to test it is hit something that glows in the dark with the laser and it should shine very brightly.

Whats your price range? Id say go with a Member-Built laser, but thats just me.
They last a good amount of time and the relationships with the members is even better. Great people around here.
Oh, and dont limit yourself with the type of batteries you own. They are cheap enough anyways.

I wouldn't mind building a 1-2W 445nm laser for you if you would like or I could direct you to someone I know who makes them as well. It would be powered by 2 16340s which can be cheaply bought on dealextreme.

445nm is blue. Price varies depending on what you want but I wouldn't mind discussing it further in PM if you like.
