Just wondering if it's possible to take the glass off a plasma globe and for it to still be safe? and before you post saying "goggle" i've all ready looked. Thanks in advance.
 





What do you mean "safe"? And what do you hope to accomplish by taking the glass off? It won't be a globe anymore if you take the glass globe off, and it won't work anymore if you put it back together.

Really don't understand your question.
 
Well it would look a lot better without the glass (kinda like a tesla coil)
 
It also won't work without the glass.  

The glass is there to hold certain gases at a certain pressure.  Change the gases or change the pressure, and it won't work the same anymore, or won't work at all.  Without the glass and the gases, you'll just have a high voltage electrode looking for things to arc to, like your fingers.  And it won't be nice, pretty streamers in a cold plasma, it'll be the arcs of a hot plasma.

I suppose if you want to turn your plasma globe into a spark generator, then you can do it that way, but I think there are better ways to make such things without ruining your plasma globe.

It still works. You'll just have a wire sticking up and if you put a conductive object near it you get a nice violet arc that can set stuff on fire and zap flies.
It doesn't look like a tesla coil or anything, but I think it's more fun than with the glass.

I mean, poking at a glass ball and watching it isn't as fun as burning stuff.
 
If all you want is some little sparks just cover the whole globe in aluminum foil and then touch it!!! ;D

^I'd guess it'd be the same order of magnitude as a van de graff generator of similar size. No guarantees, but that'd be my guess for how much of a shock it would give.
 
see I'd much rather have a van de graff generator. Those things are awesome. I tried making one in Jr. High school, but failed. Of course understanding the principle behind it would have helped a lot when I made the doggone thing.
 
I wanted to do that years ago. I found out the inside of the globe is like a vacuum and removing the glass ruins the globe. I've have to check up on that.
 
The alu foil on the globe is a bad idea, it can built up to a lethal charge, a lot worse than a Van De Graff.
 
You can take the globe off if you like, it is sealed. However if you want to put it back together be careful not to break the globe, it is glued into the base.  It is easiest just to remove the top part of the base and the globe at the same time leaving them attached.  The steel wool in the small sphere in the center will remain there when you remove it.  I couldn't find a "good" use for such a week flyback transformer so I built an ozone generator out of mine to see if it could be done.  

Just an fyi, flyback transformers are the high voltage source in CRT monitors and TVs.  Only differences being, they are allot more powerful and usually rectified(DC). You can use your old monitor to build a ionic wind (lifter) :) www DOT youtube DOT com/watch?v=crCiO367XEQ&feature=related

how do you drive them? I was not successful in building a driver for my monitor crt
