So I figured I needed some diffraction gratings to help keep fresh
the interest in the hobby.
Ordered me one of these from etimeshop 2-3 weeks ago and it arrived yesterday.
That was the cheapest I found at the time.
I knew I wanted to play plenty with the 5 different caps but as sure as hell
don't want to keep shelling out for AAAs to feed the stupid pen host
nor accept reduced brightness from 1.2V NiMhs.
So to me the obvious thing to do was rip the threaded end that accepts the
different star caps from its puny host and mcgyver it onto the aperture cap
of my trusty 50mW 18560 from focalprice.
This was a 10 minute job involving:
- pliers and an old leather belt to protect the cap from scratches while prying
- a file and some 80 then 120 grit wet sanding paper (but used it dry) to
grind away the unnecessary material from the cap
- a little drop of cyanoacrylate, so far it holds on nice
It turned quite out discreet and didn't increase the XX-152s profile by much, maybe
I'll even give it a black coat later on.
I'm rather pleased with the result and am now having fun with
my 5 trippy star caps without worrying about batteries.
