Phr build!!

Lets see the pics so we can get a better idea of whats going on.

Thanks for the clarification Chipdouglas.
That makes more sense to me now.

There is a good selection here
Plastic Enclosures and Plastic Boxes - Electronic enclosures of over 350 sizes - In the US, UK, Europe - PacTec Enclosures

Or just go to google and type in project box and try a few links :D

Are their 'free samples' actual samples of the boxes because they do bulk buying? Or is it s sample of the material? I guess it couldn't hurt to find out, its free, I'll just get 'free samples' of some otehr enclosures that look pretty nice.

EDIT: 1-50 pcs shipped NEXT DAY!!! Free samples, shipped the next day, how kick-ass is that?! BUT! $9.95 shipping >.< I don't even got $10! How sad is that?

Do you have a Radio Shack near you? I know they have for cheap but they are not like the one on the video. They are the black generic kind but they're only a few bucks.

I'd suggest that you either drill out the end of the module, or cut it off. Really, the only advantage is a bit of protection for the driver.

Did you mount the driver completely flush with the top part of the module? When I did my fist one, there was absolutely no extra space. Also, you might be able to trim the driver a tiny bit on each end to gain a mm or two.

But hey, you said it lases, so that's the main thing. Sounds like you did good.

Do you know if they're aluminum so THEY could be a heatsink? Or are the a plastic kinda thing? Either way it'll work, I just have to find a way to line the plastic hole I'm putting my diode in with some ehat resistant material in case my diode get's a bit hot...

Yeah, it's completely flush, and there is NO WAY WHATSOEVER that I will cut off some of the driver, just like I can't see myself getting an IR laser anytime soon, I just don't trust myself enough, honestly, I don't. With a red laser, I can see it, I can see the reflection off of something, I know where the reflection is. First I can't even see the 1064nm IR, PLUS I won't see reflection, I won't get an IR until I have goggles, O-7 goggles...

Nope, they're plastic. You definitely need a heatsink with a PHR. IMO the aixiz module alone isn't enough of a heatsink for a PHR.

Actually, I'd sand it before I tried to cut it. Like with a little fine sand paper on some plate glass. The older version of the Flex drive needed such treatment to fit it in a module.

Anyway, probably best not to screw with it, since it would mean desoldering the driver.

I just remembered that I still have the outer 'casing' from and old DVD/RW drive that I took apart, I might just use that for my laser 'housing'. Anybody else do this before???

UPDATE!! The laser works perfectly, every now and then it'll flicker, but that's because I have to hold it to a power source, and sometimes my positive or negative lead from my battery pack will slide off one of the tabs =/ BUT! I have a visible 'beam' in a dark area, like my closed garage with lights off, or outside at night. But the strangest thing is...even if I get my dot as small as possible, the beam still gets wide...AND the beam isn't even a violet, it's like a white-ish/grey...like it's from a normal flashlight, but it's still the coolest thing =D I can already tell this is going to be a hobby that I'm not going to just give up on in a few months ROFL! I've already spent over $100, maybe close to $160-170! And with a driver-less 20X maglite (I know, I know...), and a half-built, but fully functional PHR (even though it only runs off of 6V...I was told I should have 8-12!) AND I'll be getting 2 50mw greens this week, life's good

Glad you got it lasing

As to the way it looks, Blu Ray is strange. 405nm is right on the fringe of visibility for most (some?) people. I'd venture to say that everyone sees it differently. Myself, I see a halo around the dot, unless I'm looking at it from very close range. Also, the halo is always violet, no matter what color the dot is fluorescing.

I think a bitty PHR will be fine with only the heatsinking of the lens half of the aixiz. If you want you can get a plastic enclosure from radio shack and drill a hole big enough and thread the lens holding half of the aixiz module into the side of the enclosure. The diode won't get hot enough to melt it :P Then just toss some batteries inside and a switch and your done! (make sure you secure the batteries, you don't want them bouncing around and knocking the driver off.)

I've had a 300mW 808nm diode in the lens half of an aixiz module without using the barrel part and it works fine. I left that laser on for a good 20-30 minutes with no serious heat issues, a PHR at 100mA should do just fine.

with a phr you dont really need special heat sinking.... the module and the host will be fine. i bought one from scopeguy that came in a wicked lasers core hose and it kicks ass. its so strong i could write 10 pages on it and you still wouldn't believe me.
