Just got this in am email from paypal. More protection for buyers now.

And last but not least, you'll see some updates to our User Agreement that go into effect November 18, 2014. If you're interested in all the details, take a look at our Policy Updates Page. Here are the highlights:

• We're increasing the time for buyers to file merchandise disputes (Item Not Received and Significantly Not as Described) from 45 days to 180 days.
• We're extending buyer protection to include item not received claims for custom made products.
• Because PayPal Seller Protection and Buyer Protection policies may vary from country to country, we're adding language to clarify which country's policy applies when a seller makes a sale to a buyer outside of the U.S.

I'm glad they finally realized 45 days is not enough in some situations.
 
This is a change I like.
I ordered some custom parts that would take >45 days to fabricated. I trusted the seller since they were consistently sending me picture updates, then after day 60 nothing. No further communication.
I ordered them again from a different seller and had to open a dispute to extend buyer protection. I felt dirty doing it, but I called up PayPal before hand and they told me it was the only way to extend protection.

However, as a seller this change will be a problem as well :p I used to keep money on hold until 45 days after the sale so that if something happened I wouldn't have accounted for that money in my budget yet. 6 months is too long for that.

90 days would have been better IMO.
 
This is great news. 180 days should hopefully be plenty of time for most things. The fact that they realize this and are paying attention could bring even more protection in the future as well. I hope this won't cause more scammers to take advantage of this.
 
Can't believe I'm saying this, but, good on you PayPal.

The 180 days thing is a welcome change.

I think with more competition in online payment services, PayPal have had to "up" their game.
 
Great for dealing with sketchy Chinese suppliers where you expect more than 2 month shipping.

This is a nice change, from a buyer's perspective.

From a seller perspective, I really don't see why they couldn't have limited it to 90 days... it opens up the door to people making disputes 6 months down the road, which could be problematic, and makes tracking the information down to make your case a lot harder.
