Hi everyone,

So....here's a little purchase/build thread with the Osram PLT5-488 laser i purchased from evans965.

First up, I hesitated at this sale due to the fact the diode has been decanned, i thought who would decan a $1500usd diode. Yes evans965 paid the full price for this diode a year ago, he was kind enough to send me the invoice from his supplier.

The diode originally was built into a Jayrob C2 kit.

Not really what i wanted.

The diode was pressed into a 12mm copper module, but it couldn't be removed as it was epoxied into the Jayrob C2 Aluminium heatsink.

Now things got interesting......to my surprise, evans965 offered to de-press this decanned $1500 diode into a new 12mm copper module, and said if he fails then its on him. I hadn't even made a deposit. :pop:

I agreed, and lo and behold i woke up in the morning to see a few pictures he had sent through of the newly pressed Osram PLT5-488 diode in a new 12mm copper module, flexdrive V5 attached and with a G2 lens.

I sent through part 1/2 payments to evans965, and agreed 2/2 would be sent when i received the module and tested it for operation and color. :paypal:

Now.....the package was on its way, but for unknown reasons, took a long detour to who knows where and only after 2 weeks did the tracking finally show it was in Germany. Everyday my doubts grew on this transaction, but staying positive deemed important and it was the right decision.

The package arrived :D , and i set forth building it into a 22mm 510 Adapter, which for me is the perfect setup, but ill be creating another thread soon on this topic

Finishing up, i was surprised with the 130mw output as the flexdrive is set at 150mA, not sure the mA is accurate though. Its an unreal wavelength, alot bluer than my 495, and quite alot more cyan than my 475. There's not a chance of seeing any box effects in the output as its an Osram diode, so im very happy with the clean round dot using the G2 lens :D

Huge thanks to the amazing effort of evans965. +rep 1000 :thanks: :topic:

To the pics..........

Looking good!
That diode's been through a lot getting to this point; nice build and beautiful wavelength! :yh:

so happy u uploaded pics of the build at 150ma the laser outputs 130mw thats way more then i was thinking it would output i was thinking about 80mw enjoy the 488nm diode and make good use of it looks amazing :)

Definatley has its own story now, and here's hoping it also has a long life :D

Yes, i was also surprised! knowing the flexdrives only set @ 150mA

Very nice, But no beam shots with this pricey diode!
Beam shots coming.......

That is one beautiful build you did with that diode, Corey. It seems to get about the same power out at the same current as the Sharp diodes, but they didn't cost anywhere near $1500 originally. + Rep. :yh:

Also, I like the confirmation that 488nm looks more blue than 495nm. I have made that point, but having you make it too helps to get the point across.

Very happy with the outcome!
Yes, i know the price difference is huge, i can't really believe i have this diode, been my unicorn for year!

I can confirm the difference, and for anyone interested head on over here for a comparison:

Are you sure about the current setting on the boost driver being 150 mA? That is lower than I originally thought it to be. These diodes are generally not that efficient to give you 130 mW of optical power using a multi-element lens at only 150 mA. I had thought it was set a bit higher. Hmm.

Hi paul its a g-2 lens it outputs 60mw at 75ma and 100mw at 150ma and the g-2 lens has 30% power increase so 130mw something like that.

That’s one fine looking Aspire Mod there jnrpop. Got a spot spot for these mech mods. Thanks for showing us a peak under the hood. That one gorgeous color. :gj:

Yep G2 lens, and also decanned. I don't know if anyones ever experimented with the power loss of the can window?? I'd assume they have a 95-99% multiband pass though.

Appreciate the kind words Bob
I Love the Aspire, its long compared to other possible Mech bodies, but i love the blue trigger light, in built battery polarity protection and safely electronics.

Hi jnrpop:

Thanks for sharing your beautiful build, beam shots and comparisons! I love the color and can’t wait to see it in person. Well done!! +Reps. :gj:

Cheers Cyber!
Happy that the comparison came out half decent! Hope too you'll be seeing 488 very shortly :D

Nice build. The gold grounding piece and the nylon positive terminal piece caught my interest. Very clean method. Can you tell me more about the two additions mentioned above? Source?

That looks great! Nice beam and nice host, too. Are those Aspire hosts still available anywhere and is that a momentary switch or on/off?
