My 90 mW green laser pointer with a focusing lens finally came in today. I can't seem to light matches with it, even after adjusting the focusing lens to make the dot as small as possible.

I shot the laser at the match head for 5 to 15 seconds up close. Nothing.

How long does it take to light a match?

The match head was also white colored. I don't know if that affects it or not.

lol thats funny , do you mean to say in the title " OH Hey Guys" and misspell it on purpose?

but back to your question.. with a magnifying glass i was able to get my 20mw green to light a match..

or better said , i was able to get my tweny miliwhat grinn 2 lait ahh mach wif ay magnifaying lenz.

Not true, as my 55mW won't light a match and it peaks at 60mW.

I dont have a meatur , so im going by daguins projections.. on a green module i purchased from him.. im using a 10x convex to magnify and i can do a match with it ..

WHALE EWE HAFT TWO BI AYE BITTER LOSER
oops i mean you'll have to buy a better laser

Why people type like that is beyond me... :o

Where did you get the laser from? If its ebay then theres your problem... if the match doesn't smoke or anything then either your laser isn't actually 90mW or its something to do with the match your using, I find that if you find the focal point of the laser and then point the dot at the edge of the match just to the point where its almost missing then they light quicker. Don't aim directly at the match head or that will take ages unless you have say a 150mW.

How long does it usually take to light up?

And will coloring the white match head with a black Sharpie marker help it light up?

That depends on the lasers specs and type of match.

If your match has a white head then your not going to be able to light it unless you have a heck of a lot of power, along the lines of 1W (1,000mW). If you cover a match head with ink I am pretty sure it wont light up normally let alone with a laser. You need black heads, or at least a dark colour.

Black absorbs light, white reflects light. Hence if you point you laser at something white it looks a lot brighter than say something black.

Using a black sharpie usually works fine. How long it takes depends on a myriad of factors (output, color, focus, age of match, etc.)

Peace,
dave

O HAI DUD I HERD YOU LIEK LIGHTING MATCHES SO I'M INFORMING YO THAT YO MAY NOT HAVE GOTTEN A 90mW LASER BUT AN UNDERPOWERED ONE INSTEAD.

OSHI- AND THE WHITE HEAD DOES AFFECT THE PROCESS, TRY PAINTING IT peanut butter BLACK

Try using the small lens from the center of a PHR-803-T sled, to focus your laser.

It seems pretty clear that the biggest problem here is the white tipped match. Once you color you match tip black try it again. If that doesn't work, then we can pretty much determine that the laser is underpowered.

ORLY?!?111 NO WAI!!!

BUT I REF00SE 2 STOP PSOSTTING CRAYYAP SRY OMGLOLBUTTSECKS

SRSLY, GUY. SRSLY.

O HELLO THAR!

Will using black construction paper behind the match help it light up?

UPDATE:

OH HAY GUISE M I DOIN IT RITE?!?111

I did this and set the focus lens to its smallest dot. I kept the beam on the match for 1 minute and 40 seconds I still got the same results as before. How long does it usually take for it to light up with 90 mW?
