Oops, was sick for a few days
The Nichia didn't die from the test. It was a conscious decision to use a metal tweaker instead of the plastic one, and I shorted out the wrong thing and put 500mA through the diode! It got quite bright for a very small fraction of a second :-[
Never even got a chance to study the beam shape, which is supposedly rounder than the 6x. Never got a chance to "play" with it :-/
I would have to say I don't think this is quite as good a diode as the 6x, it is certainly not quite as efficient. But it IS the next best thing, perhaps...
