As I had not played with NIR I thought a build was in order.
This uses a sharp near infra red LD 100mw cw @150ma
LM317 circuit pushing out 200ma
7.2volt supply
and a DX heatsink

It lights matches cuts electric tape and bin liners at a fast rate
Here follow some photo's

There you go, I think this will be my last IR foray as I find blue rays more fun....

i find it odd that your camera displays IR as orange, but the laser itself looks great

I was thinking that as I was loading the photo's....had it been April the 1st I may have retitled it "home made orange laser" :)

This is a beautiful project ! Very well made inside and out ! Looks professional and neat. Do you know what nm's the diode is? Cameras can do weird color rendition things with IR.

That is a very elegant build :D sell it on ebay as an orange laser for 800 bucks :D :D I'm guessing it a CD burner 790nm diode? :-/ You could probably fit a 1W in there with no worries :D

The LD is a Sharp GH0780MA2C @ 784nm.

To the eye it is ....red, every photo I took has the same orange glow....

The worst problem I had with this was that the project box is years old and was very brittle, I have had to more or less piece together the main box, every time I touched it with a drill a bit fell off :( Ah well it was just a time filler until some more higher power reds and blues arrive :)

I have just been setting cigar dog ends in the ashtray alight, when you get the focal point exactly right the dot does look orange!
It is quite useful as it lets you know when you have hit the sweet spot.

The regulator gets warmer than the heatsink, I have run it for minutes at a time with no problems....so far :) The heatsink was from a 70mw DX module, it was knocking arouind and it fitted-ish.
