Newbie: Learn before I can burn

I think from this point on I'll have to get my head down and take notes on the subjects.

I never knew laser physics could be so interesting, I'm really looking forward to doing the mathematical side of it too.

Thanks, Radim. I have been making my own holograms since the early 1980s. There are two basic types of holograms, but many sub types as well. A transmission hologram that needs a reference beam to reconstruct the image and a reflection hologram that can be seen in ordinary light. In the video you provided they can be seen as the red holograms are transmission holograms and the green ones are reflection holograms.

The reason the reflection holograms are green is because the film on the glass plate shrinks during photographic processing and causes the wavelength sift up from red to green.

I always thought holograms were a "sci-fi" only thing. huh.

Quick question: How long do you recommend I study the theory side before I can attempt building a low power rig? (100mw or so)

I know a lot of newcomers are only in it for the melty melty, but i'm prepared to put in the hours :)
 
There are many inexpensive laser to be had on eBay in both handheld and, even better, lab lasers. You might want to get a few to try experimenting with before you attempt building one. You will need to know basic electronics before you will be able to build one from scratch. Even though 100 mW lasers seem low power, they are still very dangerous and can blind you in an instant if you are not aware of these dangers and take appropriate precautions.
 
I already have a 5mw , 532nm laser pen (lovely green beam), and i'd really love not to be blinded, haha. I'll purchase a few more powerful pointers and get the relevant goggles.

The 5mw one I use doesn't require safety goggles but I wouldn't want the beam near my eyes. ouch.
 
NO! bestlaserpointers.com is a scam place that charges way too much for over hyped crap. Avoid them like the plague. If you want a 50 mW pointer, one can be had on eBay for under $9.00 with a key lock, battery and charger included. It is commonly called a 303 laser. I can find a link for you if you can't find it for yourself.

Edit: Here's one that comes with battery, charger and screw on diffraction grating that gives a star pattern by turning the knob to cause two gratings to rotate against each other. The grating just screws on the front and can be taken off and the laser is focusable at close distances. It ships from New York so takes about a week to get it. The whole package will set you back $9.97. Don't believe the 5 mW claim as it is necessary to sell these higher power pointers in the US because of FDA laws.

I'll just write this to sum up this hobby:

"Once you've spent $300+ on a laser just to enjoy the color or burning, you know you've become taken by the laser disease and it's inside you". Look at most members, we're long gone from our normal pre-hobby self lol :crackup: :D

That is so true, Alex. Otherwise I could not imagine getting RPL-II. :D :crackup:
 
Paul, i thought the bestlasers website seemed a tad fishy, thanks for "pointing" (haha) me in the right direction and radim that sanwulasers website is great. :yh:
