newbie allert...hello all

its easy to have people help you: show them you are interested and willing to listen and willing to learn, thats all! and obviously you do all of that! :-)

about hypnoting and fun stuff:

one of the most hypnoting things (in my opinion) is a "liquid sky". you basically make your laserdot a sharp line, like only as thick as your original laser dot was. when you blow smoke through it (incandescents, or less healthy, cigarette smoke), it looks like, hmm, slowly moving and changeing waves or clouds..

its easy to make a line out of your laser. you can shine it on a rotating mirror, or shine it through a cylindrical lens. the clear handle of a wineglass does too! to look nice, you would need a bit of laser-power, your average laserpointer would be too dim, if not in a really dark room.

have a look here on the page of one of our fellow experimenters, pictures and instructions:
http://www.rog8811.com/liquidsky.htm

another fun and easy experiment is the "laser magnificator": you remove the lens from your laser so you have the laserdiode shining without anything in front of it. the diode is really small, a fraction of a millimeter. the "beam" is more like a broad flashlight. if you hold homething into the beam, its shadow will be enhanced the same way as the beam itself. that way, you can project the shadow of a needle-hole (whats that called, where the thread goes in?) a half meter wide on a wall. its more impressive than it sounds ;-)
sorry, couldnt find a pic..
and, i'm almost ashamed to say, but again you would need a fair bit of laser-power *laughs*

for starting, you two will not need fancy things. as being beginners, it would perhaps make sense to get a "bag" full of laser-thingies from one of the members here? mirrors, lenses and regular lasers are collecting dust in cardboardboxes at some of us here.. of course the things would be only semi-built and not all finished! ;-)

cheers!
