NEW Laser Build NOT WORKING ---HELP Please

Ok so I bought a Nub44 6W from DTR with a 4.5A driver unit . I coupled this to a Eghemus custom host and fitted 2 ICR 3200Ma 18650's to it . press switch and laser fires momentarily (maybe half a sec) then cuts out ... i can keep pressing the switch and it will keep firing/cutting out as quick as i can press it. is it an overload protection problem in the batteries or something in the driver ? i've tested the switch and it works on the multimeter. it seems from the reading i get on the meter that i get to about 8v then the current cuts out. (tested before the driver) Batteries are registering 4.05V each standing from the meter.

Your new i see well first the right thing to do is to introduce your self so we can get to know you. Little background would be nice buddy folks would be more willing to help.
Ok sounds like your driver But check the connections for shorts . connections from the host use shrink wrap tubing. If the diode is going on then off the driver isn''t sending current to it constantly . PM DTR tell him whats going on he's always ready to help a customer.

Most likely the batteries cant deal with the load. If you are drawing high currents IMR batteries such as AW IMRs or IMR panasonics (CGR18650CH) would be best. :beer:
 
Find an old computer power supply and make a DIY Power Supply for 5v and 12v. There are plenty of youtube guides. Works well for testing and I use it for charging my R/C and hobby stuff.
 
HeHe Yes Its The Battery's i have Olight Battery's And the protection kicks in and the laser turn's on for 1sec and off so this time i only use 2xAW IMR 16340 ( AW :fightin: Olight )

P.S Am Not Helping You Anymore Ware Are You From And How Old Are You !!

OK so some background , Apologies I only signed up a few weeks ago however i have been long time visitor of LPF and have been trawling my way around LPF for a number of years admiring peoples builds and generally drooling over some really nice kit. I was in Turkey on my Honeymoon a few months back and a saw a 1000mw green laser and it got me thinking how much I wanted one again. That said I live in Australia where you can bring some AK47s or a couple a kilo's of coke with little fust but swat teams descend from black helicopters if you try to bring in a laser (law here is 1mw).

A note to anyone wanting lasers in Australia it is Illegal to bring any laser that is attached to a portable power supply (batteries) and is rated more than 1mw. that said it is legal to bring in the diodes and the drivers all ready wired and ready to go. you just need to get the host sent separately (or build your own)

So I did a bunch or research and signed up and got the kit. the host from Eghemus arrived yesterday(27th) which was brilliant as it's my 30th Birthday today (28th) and i have been telling the boys all about my upcoming new toy for weeks and we are having a huge party so I am pretty excited to get it working. !!!! :-) :-) :-)

Hence the rush rush post last night in desperation to try and get it working, i'll post some pics when I get it working. even with 1 sec bursts it is EXTREMELY Bright. it's a blue laser and rated at around 6W.

I have a feeling it's the batteries protection cutting in as when I put the multimeter on the wires prior to the driver and press the switch I briefly get around 8V supplied then nothing. I thought at first perhaps the switch was only monetary however when metered in the on position it has zero resistance so it's not that.

Ok so updating , I fixed it , as suspected it was the battery overload protection circuits. I carefully peeled back the Negative terminal to expose the Circuit PUCK and carefully cut the connecting wire to the positive side of the battery( you need to be careful as the cutters easily rupture the shielding on the next layer of the battery and short circuit the battery...which doesn't end well.

I then pulled to circuit board off (about the size of 10c piece) and then also peeled the connecting wire strip to the positive side all the way back and removed, bit a electrical tape here and there.

and Volla it now works ...I'll post some pics after tonight and maybe a few pics on removing the Circuit protection if anyone's interested

Also tip my hat to Alien Laser ... I reckon if the rebels had of had all our lasers and pointed them at the death star ...it would have been a very short movie :-) :evil:

I would really suggest getting some cells that are rated to handle the current draw. That protection was probably there for a reason and the current draw from this unit may be more than those cells are rated for which could lead to a dangerous situation. A good IMR cell like ones from AW if you are using smaller 16340's or 18350's will be perfect. If you are using two 18650's there are many options that are high drain. I just worry that you could have a blow out after doing surgery on the cell and possibly running it past its limits.:beer:
 
Cheers DTR . BTW thanks for the great diode and driver setup. I'll get some Panasonics when i'm out next. we played with the laser last night and had no issues but i don't plan on running around long term with some batteries without the protection on them, they still have the over pressurization cut-out protection on the Positive side of the battery (you can tell they have them from the small holes in the positive nipples. I suppose it just puts them in the category of most of the .....Fire brand batteries

Like i said DTR comes thru He's a good man. Yes new Panasonics,AW;s LG HE4. etc..You get what you pay for.And in a nice build you took your time with not worth the risk besides personal injury. I'm glad to see things are working out for you. Next step lets see some pics :)) Rich....
