New high power Rocket launch

This is in Canada btw. .. If I launch this in Seoul, I'd get shot at by our friendly Northern neighbours.

~Mach 1.51... a very rough calculation. Ground temp was 7.2c

Sonic "boom" was heard quite a ways. :drool:

I'll try and get the high speed shot showing the compression wave as it was definitely visible!
 
That's awesome. I am anxious to see the video. It has been a long time since I heard a sonic boom. Can't say that I've ever seen the pressure wave. I'll look forward to seeing that in your video.

It'll be in a still frame. This rocket was moving much faster than the DSLR could film at. I'll ask to see if the shockwave got captured well enough in a still frame.

I missed the video first time around. It seemed pretty overcast when you launched. It looked like the video was over as soon as it started. Still very cool. Next time if you set up in better conditions and away from the launch site you might get better results. Sure would have liked to see the pressure wave, though.

I will have a look through the high speed still footage and see if I can't find the pressure wave. The weather was party cloudy yesterday, but clear enough to fire ( only for about an hour). Ceiling was approx. 5000ft. Yes, the launch was over as soon as I hit the fire button. Nice big FOOOM, and the rocket was gone to rocket heaven.

We do another firing tomorrow with a 2x and a 3x cluster rocket. I'll get better footage. :beer: Hopefully weather holds out.

I look forward to seeing what you can get on video. If you have enough people there with cameras, you may be able to get several vantage points. If I were there i'd try to go.

Lol, if I did this, I would get a 'friendly' knock on the door by my next door neighbours and most likely the police, army and fire brigade. :D Big rocket launches are illegal in the UK, even by professionals. It is one of the reasons why we don't have our own space program. :p

High power launches are NOT illegal in the UK. I've actually seen a few in S.Wales. You only need to have a look at Legal | UKRA - United Kingdom Rocketry Association.

These guys go to K series engines... that's between a level 2 and level 3 cert. Way out of my league.


In one of the rocketry classes, we have both the son of a fire chief and an son of a RCMP officer. They're all for it and even encouraging it. :beer:

We chose this site so that it would be far away from low flying aircraft and away from military installations. :)

Yeah, I am surprised you were told that. I saw one by accident some years ago driving to Cardiff. I can't remember where it was exactly. sure enough I found the website. :)
I hope to have some more video up within the week. Todays launch was cut short due to a strong SE wind that picked up in the afternoon. Our first flight was on a G cluster. It ended up travelling 850m up and drifted over 2 Km from the launch site landing on private property.... recovery will occur tomorrow.

Sounds like the University also has rockets they want to fire off at "our" field sometime next weekend. So we'll see what happens.
 
Surely these larger rockets have parachutes attached and deployed when they are in decent. Can't imagine what one would do at the end of free fall. YOUCH! Thanks for the information.

Indeed. Those larger ones need 2. One as a main, and the other as a reserve.
Quite often on a reloadable you need either a pyro charge or a CO2 burster to pop the parachute (fired by a timer circuit or sensor).

Large ones coming down from high up (~2-3KMs) can be travelling fast enough to go through a roof. Ballistic missiles aren't the purpose of school sanctioned launches.

Yes, and you saw the picture of the fiberglass cone I've got. It's quite heavy.
It's got a razor sharp metal tip on it. Apparently it was the end cone for a
practice SNEB rocket. It came with a bunch of goodies. :D

That one is built for a minimum diameter rocket on a 29mm or 38mm motor. It's going to need an RF tracker.
 
A few new rocket launches have been completed as we finally got the weather to do some over Easter.

Finally, we are attracting some much wanted attention with the program!

Also we finally have our first samples of Redline propellant in Canada. We are also testing NBT propellant as well.
