New Boost Driver from OdicForce






It is nice to see a new source appear, a bit of a shame with the size though, it will not fit inside a aizix module.
 
Reminds me a lot of the O like driver

I'm got to be honest - I think these are all pretty crappy drivers.

I haven't had any consistency between the ones I've tried. (Haven't tried ODF's yet, but they all look the same!)
 
input current is only 1.6A max, you would have to mod it to use an 18650.
 
Nope, sorry ..... this chip is a preset current driver that use the drop on the junction of the mosfet, for sense the current ..... you can try to play with the ITH pin, but it's an AC coupling, and i don't know between what limits you can play with that ..... or, as alternative, you can try to add a low value resistor in serie with the main mosfet for increase its dropout, but in this case you can't use a trimmer (cause the resistor take the same current as the LD)
 
Considering its internal structure and the suggested values, there is one thing that you can try, if you have one of them at hand, but i can't grant you that it may work well .....

changing the 2200 ohm resistor from the ITH tree with a 1800/2000 ohm resistor with a 1000 ohm trimmer in serie (for change the value between 1K8/2K and 3K), seeing if this is enough for give some current accomodation without change also the two capacitors (or, at least, also adding another 220pF capacitor in parallel to the one that is connected in serie with the resistor you change) ..... this can give some regulation, but about the linearity and stability, it's a different thing, you need to do the tests with the driver connected to a dummy load and an oscilloscope, for check that this modifications does not introduce too much instability or spikes ..... i can't do the tests myself, cause i don't have one of these drivers.

From the datasheet alone, it does not give me any other ideas, sorry.
 
I do plan to bring assorted DX flashlight drivers onboard next trip and check them out with an flukescope. The idea is that if I read up on enough datasheets I will be able to make a guess at what resistor to change.
 
Flashlight drivers ? ..... not these ones ?

They are usually more easy to understand, cause the most part of them uses standard (or "almost standard", also if not available here in Italy) chips, and almost all of them, when they work in current mode, have a low value resistor connected on the FB pin ..... only check that the Vin is less than 3.3V, when you select them, cause usually the ones with a minimum Vin of 3.3V are only buck drivers, not boost ones.
 
Well, I have some flashlight drivers inbound so it would make sense to start with them.
And yes, I have selected boost ones. :)

(Also, every $1 AA flashlight comes with a light duty host and a small boost driver to experiment with.) :D
