There is a new lens in the neighborhood...

I made this thread just so there would not be any confusion with another lens being available. These are my honest findings with the power comparisons. (as everything else I share) I have two of these that I bought. They are the same price. I would gladly sell them at a couple of dollars less to anyone who also wanted to do some comparison testing! :)

It is the exact same optical design as the 405-G-1, but Will got them from a different supplier, and they have a slightly different AR coating. Same focal length, same side splash, same specs exactly...

Will (lasers4u) is calling it the 405-G-2 only because of the slightly different AR coating.

He was my supplier for the 405-G-1 bare optics, and I can get these new lenses from him as well.

But I went ahead and got my latest supply of the 405-G-1 lenses direct from the manufacture because I wanted to stick with what I have had all along. Of course, I could not buy the quantity that gives much of a price break. (need large quantity for a good price break) So the price remains the same for my supply of the 405-G-1's...

However, the new 405-G-2 is basically the same output for blu-ray. (very close - see power comparisons below)

Same pricing on the 405-G-2 as well...

Not sure why Will says they are better in his e-bay add, because they are not better than the 405-G-1. About the same for blu-ray, but not better...

Testing:

I did testing with three different lasers... (two different power blu-ray's, and a red)

GGW 6X @ 188mA's:

* 405-G-1: 234mW's
* 405-G-2: 231mW's

BDR-205 12X @ 350mA's:

* 405-G-1: 480mW's
* 405-G-2: 478mW's

LOC red @ 431mA's

* 405-G-1: 292mW's
* 405-G-2: 279mW's
* 650-G-1: 305mW's

So although it is not as good for red, it is pretty much the same for blu-ray. (within a couple of mW's)

For red, my 650-G-1 is about 5% better than the 405-G-1, and 10% better than the 405-G-2...

The different AR coating

@ Jayrob -- So the focal distance is the same?

Peace,
dave

Yes, it is the exact same optical design. I'm going to edit the first post to mention that... (the design is well known in the lens industry, and is not patented)

Does the G-2 get rid of some of the extra splatter that the G-1 has?

Same side splash, same focal length and everything. Basically the same lens with a slightly different AR coating...

I just wanted to make this thread so that there was not any confusion with the appearance of a new kid on the block...

It just has a different AR coating and is from a different manufacturer than the original 405-G-1 lens.

There isn't one that's why he posted this thread. To explain that they're basically the same.

Will told me they were the same price...

He said he was having some issues with the other manufacture and got these because they are the same. (we tested them before)

So then I told him that I would get some from him and do further testing on them with red as well.

I also went ahead and got the 405-G-1's direct from the manufacture. So that I could stay consistent with what I have had all along... I have, and will continue to have the 405-G-1's.

Really not much of a difference...

Again, I only showed this thread to try and avoid confusion with two 405-G type lenses being available...

Thats too bad jayrob.
I hope you can continue to get the original g-1 lens for us, for a long time to come.
Even though your tests only indicate a 2-3mW difference. That plays a big part when your assembling your laser, knowing your using some of the best parts you can get.

Oh yeah... The 405-G-1's will always be available. I already got my supply direct from the manufacture.

Will could still get them as well if he wanted to... But the 405-G-2 is pretty much the same for blu-ray...

I understand now... There really isn't anything to understand. Now I feel very stupid. :crackup:

I'm getting there oh forum veterans... I'm learning... :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:

As you have been told repeatedly in threads, in PM's, in rep comments, and in public comments:

Think and read much more and post much less.

All of the info you needed was here in this thread. However, instead of reading it (and maybe re-reading it) and thinking it through, you just kept asking. You sound like a two-year-old repeatedly asking, "Why?"

If you do as I recommend, you will feel stupid much less often and you will not continue to irritate other members.

Peace,
dave

Yes, that is the only difference in the two lenses. A slightly different AR coating...

My question wasn't answered in the first few replies though. I was just trying to figure if there was a catch to the power being a tiny bit lower. But as I said before, I understand now.

Actually, your question was answered in the very first post.

I also directly answered his question right after he asked it.

It is becoming obvious that he either has no self control (or is unable to do any critical thinking) or he is intentionally continuing to do what he has been warned against doing.

Peace,
dave
