New 22x LG dvd-burner, good laser diode?






Well, the burner just arrived today and I'm not sure if I have good news or bad news because there are two different types of diodes in it: the horrible flat plastic kind with four pins and the normal round kind with 3 pins. I can't seem to get the diode out of the metal casing it's in right now so I'm going to have to find the thread that explains that. I'm not sure whether the nice round 3 pin diode is the IR diode or the red diode so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for now. Hopefully this is going to be a monster!

If you have a multimeter try setting it to the diode testing function and place your probes on the flat diode's legs to see if it lights up, if it doesn't then it's either dead or it's an IR diode.
Could you post some pics of the flat diode and the round diode in the metal heatsink?

does it look like the GH16P35A8C diode here:
http://www.sharp-world.com/products/device/lineup/selection/pdf/led_laser200801_e.pdf ?
if it does, then pin 3=cathode (-), pin 4 =anode (+). the upper cap can be removed and the die becomes visible. can you post some macro shots?
 
Ok check it out, here are the pictures [actually I seem to be able to only post one picture...] I took of the thing. Sorry for the suspense. I haven't soldered on the wires and hooked up the diodes to a driver yet, and I accidentally ripped out the two center pins on the flat diode when I was trying to get it out - bummer. What's interesting is, the casing for the flat diode looks like it could be put into an aixiz module anyway without removing the little black plastic diode. So you might be able to rig up 350mW+ of disgusting laser power with a little work. The dimensions are 5mm x 6mm for the barrel on the flat diode's casing and 1.1cm x 7mm for the rectangular base.

hmm. the thing to the left looks like the casing of the IR diode found in 20x LGs. could you also take a pic of the front side of the round one and the sled itself?

Was this what you meant by the front of the round diode?

it looks like an open can... the die has some similarities to that of the open can diode we know (as far as i can see). we wont get to know which is which until you test them somehow. dmm is an option, but the glow the red produces would be very faint. also, the Vf of the red should be a bit higher than that of IR.
 
Well, I officially destroyed the round diode like the noob I am. The only way I could think of getting the diode out was by using a grindstone on the metal housing and then rip it out with pliers, then I took forever soldering it and got solder everywhere so it's toast no matter what. The grindstone got it REALLY hot too. I haven't touched the flat diode yet, so that's next on my list. I don't have a digital multimeter unfortunately... Here's a pic of the round diode anyway. I guess it's a short open can, and i accidentally shaved off a tiny bit of the top when I was grinding so it looks a little gnarled. Plus one of the metal pins fell out.

A good education is rarely free. The diode looked like "the kind". You just need to go back to alter the process by which you remove it from its heatsink. (or look for one that's easier to harvest.)
