i just recieved my rkcstr driver and to set the current i need to measure the resistance but on my DMM (which i built) there is no Ma setting only things like 10A-.. and A-.. (<with those dots underneath the line)

p.s could i use a dead one of these diodes as a test load 10mW Laser Diode - Jaycar Electronics

On the A setting you should be able to measure hundreds of Milliamps. 0.25A is 250mA

How about a clear Picture of the DMM that you built....:thinking:
It would be easier to help you if we knew what exactly you
were using..

Why dont you buy another multimeter?
They are cheap as $15. And my one (costs about $20) measures perfectly mV and mA. I used both methods to test the drivers before soldering the diode.

Or might I suggest buying a quality one that wont break on you, and that has all the functions you need.

I bought a $10 one and the sharp prong things fell off. Also, sometimes I have to squeeze it for the screen to work :thinking:

The "200m" setting will measure up to 200 milliamps, any higher and you will have to go to "10A". Depending on the meter this setting (10A) might only be accurate +/- 100mA.
The one you have might be an excellent meter. If you say you built it but do not know how to operate it, I assume it was a kit?
If it was a Heathkit brand, it could be a very good meter. Don't forget also, if you build it, it will have to be calibrated against a known accurate meter.

On the diode question........NO!

If your measuring resistance using the "thru-holes" on the rckstr driver I believe you have to set you DMM to measure Ohms, then Divide 1.25 by that resistance to get your output current setting in A (multiply by 1000 to get mA).

This is too much fun, I was moving all my pyro chems last weekend and I had a container of this guy break open and I lost about a 1/10 of a pound of him on the ground LOL

yeah i saw that kev. but he wants mv or ma. the only reason he would need to check resistance would be to see if the resitors are good or to check for an open circuit or something.
 
I hear what your saying, yes, that is definitely what he wants but he was had this in another thread and he doesn't have a test load so by using the method I was stating it would give him mA.

BTW greenlaser, you should definitely get a test load because this method is not as accurate

and please post some pics.
