I know that it is pretty much impossible, but I figured it was worth a try. After I posted that "P.S." I was thinking that I should take it off because someone will probably try to turn it into something innapropriate now that I gave them a reason too :. Glad you like the idea though, just have to see what Wesdaman thinks about it.

[highlight]**EDIT** [/highlight]Both the 803T and the 0811 diodes begin to lase under 40mA. They will give you about 15-20mW at that power. Heat is almost not a consideration. See if Rkcstr still has (or will build you) one of his old 38mA fixed drivers that you can put into a module. If you are willing to do this, I will send you an 0811 diode and a module. You'll have to get the driver, solder it, get the host, and assemble it, but we can get you in under your budget this way.

The 0811 is a good idea but I don't think he should use an Rkcstr driver. It may cost a bit more than his budget but I think he should get a Flexdrive. A Flexdrive will mainly be better because it is really tuff to add up enough batteries to get 7.2V in a nice looking host with common batteries in the U.S. In other words you may not want to buy a CR2 or CR123A host (they hard to find besides the internet) or use L-ions because if you buy rechargeables and they go bad after awhile his freind will have to order more or suffer some big bucks for alkalines. With the Flexdrive he can use AAA's or AA batteries which are really easy for his friend to get if her batteries die out.

Oh, and yes Rkcstr does still have the 38mA driver if you find some way to work out 7.2V.

He can have the module (with diode and driver) already built. All that will really be left is to put it in whatever is going to hold the module and solder the leads to the battery source. That way there is much less chance of making a mistake or getting frustrated while she is watching.

In addition, any required "maintenance" is a plus. She can use his charger (gotta get together twice for each charge-up). OR, at the cost of the unit we are getting down to, he can give her a charger along with the unit.

Oh, Ok I see what you are getting at now, Rkcstr driver is easier to use because it stays inside the module and it is already pre-set. Plus I forgot what current we were suggesting running it at, at 38mA those batteries will last forever so he might as well just let her use his charger if he has one. Best thing he could probably do is get a small flashlight (Girls like small stuff, they think its "CUTE") that has a AAA battery cairrage inside which he can take a piece of copper wire (Extender magnets cost $) and solder it to the posetive and negative terminals of one of the battery placement areas and glue the thing in or something so that there is no chance of it falling out (Or if he wants to use extender magnets he can but he may want to glue those in too just so they don't fall out). After that all he needs is two 10440's which I don't know where he can get them cheaply and quickly before her B-Day and maybe a charger if he doesn't already have one (DX shipping takes so long, it is out of the question). One charge of those batteries and she will probably be set for months of battery life  .

This is probably gonna be the cheapest Blu-Ray anyone has ever made if he decides to make one.

P.S. Dave, giving him a free diode and module is a very generous thing to do if he wants to do this. I'm happy that someone +1'd you for it, you deserve it

Thats what you want though. If she gets angry, it means she has a reason to be angry. For example, if she just didn't give a sh*t about him, she wouldn't get angry if her best friend got a laser. If she does get angry, you know she cares PLUS... women always want what they cant have. Gotta play hard to get sometimes

This goes back to the "friend" scenario. Sometimes when you become "friends" with a girl, she will NEVER allow you out of that "friend" mode. Girls value friends more than guys do. It is easy for girls to get "romantic boyfriends." It is very hard to get a boy to just be a "real friend" to her. This is bad if the girl you are friends with is the one you want to be romantic with. However, it is great for your romantic opportunities with her girl friends.


She will actively work to get you hooked up with one of her friends. If it doesn't "work out" with that friend, she will work to get you another. Her friends will trust you more. You are considered a tested and safe product. Plus, no matter what happens, it smells a lot nicer around girls than guys and the scenery is 10,000 times better

Bottom line -- Don't try to "make friends" with a girl you are interested in. Let her know you are interested in her as a girlfriend. "Make friends" with HER friends.

May I suggest that you build a module (Trust me, chicks dig it when something was made expecially for them). Use a cheap 803t diode and a Flexdrive set at 50mA or something (Whatever the 803t will lase at).

Then you can both go out and find a flashlight togeather that she likes and that will fit everything inside nicely. Then you go over to her house some time and show her how everything works and put it inside the flashlight while she gets to watch, wait! better yet, have her put it into the flashlight while you give her directions and show her how  . You probably won't need a heatsink for such a low current but you may want to customize a washer or something just to hold the module in place.

Once you are all done she will end up with a laser half made by her and half made by you, sorta like a friendship bracelet. So whenever she messes around with it she will think of you  ;D.

This really shouldn't cost that much, probably <$60 and you guys will become much closer friends. Should be around 20mW too (Good to see a beam on a foggy morning).

I don't think he would want to do that.... first he would have to build one for her best friend then he would have to find some kind of alternative laser to give to his friend (She really won't like it if you give her the same laser you gave her friend). This would cost more too considering his budget.

You know what, that gave me a good idea . This will add on to my other idea. First he gives her best friend a laser a couple days before his friends birthday. If his friend gets very mad and jelous and he can tell her that she has something special coming for her. Then when they make one togeather she will see that you treat her expecially uniquely and it will probably put you in good shape for a "Romantic" relationship (If your into that) .

Excellent advice, although sometimes it can backfire. Sometimes the friends of the girl think "Well if he's so great why aren't you dating him" or something along those lines. Sometimes you'll just get friend-zoned by the whole group. The last line is the best advice any young man can get. Let your intentions be known from the start. Dont work the friend angle with a girl because 99% of the time it wont work.

You'll need a Rkcstr driver set at about 40mA. Either get it straight from Ryan or see if somebody else on the list has one. I'd hook you up, but I don't have one here.

You'll need to find Which small flashlight you (and she) want to use.

You'll have to figure out how to put it together. We will help.
