Well, planes won't fly at 60,000 feet, but had it been low enough something like that would have been an option. Hydrogen makes a poor balloon gas.
 
Yes it was shot down by an F-22 with a single sidewinder missile.
BTW an F-22 can and will fly at 65,000 feet.
 
I was referring to propeller airplanes not fighter jets. An F-22 can fly at mach 2.5.
WRONG AGAIN PAUL
Actually an F-22's top speed is mach 2.25 at altitude, mach 1.21 at sea level and mach 1.82 at " supercruise " altitude.

F-22 Performance
Maximum speed:

Mach 2.25, 1,500 mph (2,414 km/h) at altitude
Mach 1.21, 800 knots (921 mph; 1,482 km/h) at sea level
Mach 1.82, 1,220 mph (1,963 km/h) supercruise at altitude
