Hooray. Time to rant.

The topic, this time around, is DX and why I hate them.

I hate the abundant glorifying that DX receives here. Guess what? people go on and on about how great and amazing and super wonderful their lasers are, and in the same breath go and condemn ebaysers to hell. The thing is... they're pretty much the same thing. Don't you remember the good old days when "Newwish" was almost a swear word around the forums? Don't you remember when nearly anyone selling them was written off as a scammer? WHAT HAPPENED? Now, they go around getting lovey-dovey about them, calling them "good quality lasers" (YES someone said that to me yesterday. I proceeded to beat their pants off with evidence of the contrary.). And yet, it's a very rare day when one is purchased that actually runs even close to in-spec. And then, they say that I can't bash DX because "Well, some people have problems with their lasers from Nova and stuff too" (YES AGAIN, somebody actually said that to me.). Ok, let's evaluate that. The vast majority of lasers that DX gives out underperform drastically. The vast majority of lasers that Nova gives out are incredible. The numbers are inversely proportionate. Even after that, people have told me that the prices negate that. Umm, NO. The prices don't change anything. Guess what? If you think you can pay that much for a laser, and actually get a good one, you're in for a rotten surprise. You pay for a POS, and you get a POS.
And what's with all these people saying "Oh, they're just great for n00bs, point them to those 2 magical letters!!1!one!" N00bs, of all people, should start out with something good, solid, and pretty dang close to foolproof. Would you tell a new driver to get this truck?

Have people forgotten what an actual, GOOD, "out-performs-your-uncle's-'69 Mustang" laser is? I guess so.

I read that thread you were talking about.But still the quality varies.You can get a complete FUBAR POS or a working POS Personally , I don't regret buying my DX30.It does what it says.It may not be an exquisite piece of technological engineering like the X-series equivalent.But here I am not being able to afford spending $100 on the X-25 , not to mention a more powerful model.The whole point in directing "n00bz" to cheap products is so they won't spend a lot of money on something that they may grow bored of.Of course this may go both ways: they may not start liking lasers just because you made them buy a piece of junk, and there's the safety factor too.But it's not like we're saying "go buy from DX cause your new".We just let them know the choices they have: DX=cheap lasers, NOVA=good lasers.They choose by themselves.
Anyway, there's also Ultrafire and Romisen who make lasers for DX, not just Newwish.I don't even know who makes the blue lasers or the dilda. :-/

That truck could be just fine for a new driver if he's really careful.Sure accidents happen, and they happen to seasoned drivers too, it's not always your fault.An experienced driver or a new one, they would both die in case of an accident driving that thing.You can't say the same about DX lasers.100mW of NovaLaser will damage your eyes just as much as 100mW of DX laser in case of an accident.You just have to "drive" the DX laser more carefully because they couldn't afford mounting a small piece of glass in front of it :

I don't agree.

usually when you start with something you TRY it with the cheapest method/way/product, so you know you like it.

i'm sure I WOULD NOT buy a 600 dollars RPL for my first laser.

The blue ones are Spymodex. The most common lasers from them are Newwish...so I didn't feel the need to post every brand.

But still, there is some sort of benefit in buying a quality product for the first time.If you like it, it will last you a long time, if you get bored, you can still sell it.If you buy cheap, you risk it breaking and be left with nothing.

Personally , I always buy cheap stuff because I don't have a lot of money.

you buy something expensive with GREAT build quality when you KNOW you're gonna use them A LOT and you want them to last.

that's the criteria i'm applying to buy my DJ equipment.

i'll go with Pioneer, all the way.

I only recommend dx to people who want a cheap first laser and can't afford a $200+ nova laser. Dx lasers generally won't disappoint you if you don't have high expectations to begin with. Sure a true 30 that only puts out 20mw might be crap by my standards but a noob won't think about the laser being 10mw underpowered. He will be thinking about how cool it looks at night and the great price he got it for.

DX lasers are a cheap way to get into the hobby and decide if lasers are for you. Eventually they will get tired of their crappy dx laser and want something better. That is when you tell them about the more expensive alternatives like optotronics/laserglow/nova.

Btw DX has at least 4-5 laser suppliers. Newwish, Ultrafire, Romisen, and other companies supply the red/blue lasers. The red laser is probably supplied by a company related to Aixiz and the Blue lasers are the same model that warnlaser/boblaser sells. c0ldshadow apparently got a good one and since no one else has reviewed one of the blues yet it is too early to say whether they are good or crap.

All but 2 of my DX greenies were purchased with the intention of stripping them for the module, since they now do the modules there is no need to.
From these cheap modules I have built 4 projects that included greenies, have killed one through my own stupidity the rest are still going strong.
I have owned and used a DX50 for nearly a year, it is still good.

So it boils down to the fact that I have had a lot of fun for a few $ spent with DX that I would not have had if I had spent a lot of cash on something that is too expensive to take apart.

You pays your money, you take your choice.....

I have to disagree about your statement about DX lasers being bad for n00bs. Razako summed it up pretty well, but I have to say DX is great for new people in the hobby. The true 30 is perfect for newcomers, and although is won't be as high of quality as an X25, it is a heck of a lot cheaper. For a first laser it should be something that isn't super high quality because if the user accidentally screws something up, it's not near the loss of something more expensive.

Yeah, I wouldn't think of opening up and screwing with an X175. DX lasers are good for messing with, you paid so little for them who gives a damn? They have such a low RMA rate because nobody can be bothered to send it back! ;D

I think there is a bit of difference between ebay lasers and DX lasers, even if they are the same model. The most obvious difference is price. what is $25 on dx is probably 75 or 100 on ebay. But, the biggest difference is the way DX will stand behind what they sell. If you contact an ebay seller and say "its mode hopping" they will say "so? it still works... no refund" whereas DX will take it back with virtually no questions asked.

I've always been for dealextreme, but against NewWish Pens. Right after i bought my first DX pen style laser i realized how bad they were and always talked about it since. The pen will break when dropped, cuz of the length of the pen + weight. and overheats, and dims, and the button is bad.. there's lots wrong with them.

I don't see what the big deal is. If you were new to lasers, i doubt you'd go out and spend >$800 on a RPL. DX is good for n00b's, simply because its cheap. Yes the quality may not be the best, but they are the best priced greenies out there, that still have _some_ quality to them.
