:yh:Hi all, been away for quite awhile now. Shoot, I probably wasn't even here by many standards. But here I am trying to post a quick vid of my new laser. It starts strobing after about 30 seconds. Lasts a bit longer with the battery fresh off the charger do I'm pretty sure my batteries are toast. What do you all think?

Who built/where did you get this laser?
What driver is it using?
What batteries powering it?

Could be crap batteries, not enough input voltage and low mAh rating. Had my laser built and used those cr123 3v batteries. Started to strobe after 10-15 seconds. Then tried those 3.7v 16340 cells and everything worked out fine.

Try changing the battery, Is the driver heatsinked to the host body?

I'm sure the build was good. This was originally an IgorT 6X at 193mW. It burned out recently and I had one of the most respected members here turn it into a 600mW blue. Daguin did the work so I have no doubt that its built perfectly. I'm ordering some new 14500 batteries from DX in a few minutes. Man this thing puts out a lot of light. Makes me want to think twice bout building a jayrop monster mag at 1.8W and want to do it faster too. This thing is nice.

DX batteries are a bunch of crap recycled and wrapped in a new plastic packing.. I dont trust chinese batteries, and for a 445 not one bit..
You should go for a AW Brand 14500 for a 445nm Laser.. These are high discharge capable batteries and would last much longer, also the rated capacity is very actual capacity! These are a tad expensive but worth every penny!

Hey, thanks for the link. Yes they are more expensive but still not that bad. Got 2 ordered.

Dang, I was worried bout that too. Too much laser for a Romisen? Still gonna be extreme fun, just at shorter durations.

I wouldnt jump straight to driver overheating issue because it is a 600mW blue laser and i am sure daguin has taken care of that..

There is 2 things that make This Issue.

1) Driver over heating and thermal protection kicking in.

2) Batteries running Low that will cause the driver to over heat more because it will try to pull more currant thus making the driver over heat much faster bring us to 1 again.

So i would first charge the cells and see if it goes away. If it doesn't then get new and better cells and try that. If that does not fix it then driver is over heating.

But for sure that is Thermal Protection kicking in.

There is No such thing of the driver Pulsing because cells are too low. This driver does not have this feature. The driver Pulses because its over heating trying to pull more currant to boost and maintain Currant because the cells are low..<THat is what causes the Pulsing.:)

Well I only have 2 of these batteries left and both do the same thing. Right off the charger the laser works for 2min maybe 2.5 then starts the strobing. These are at least 4 years old and were cycled a lot in the 1st year or so. Then they were just left in my toolbox at work with very little charge in them a long time. I'll bet they have gone sour on me.

New bats are on order and the really great thing is they are not coming from other side of planet. Only Oklahoma is between me and them so they should slide in here pretty quickly. Hopefully that will solve the issue.

Lithium Batteries have a life-span of 2-3Years no matter if they are kept on shelf or recharged twice a day for 2 years.. They also dont have a memory issue..
I'm sure the batteries are long gone and the internal resistance is high as hell..
Once the new batteries arrive it will go back to normal.. and a 2min duty cycle is still good for a fresh off the charger 4 yr old battery

Ive got a pair of 16340 AW cells I bought in 2008 or 2009 its been almost 4 years ago. I got them from 4sevens.com for a fenix flashlight I bought from them.
I'm still using them in my 532nm O-like with no issue! maybe its due to it being a high quality cell.

Edit: It still holds its charge better than the DX specials I have LOL

Generally the batteries should be retired after they reach unacceptable internal resistance.
At a certain load, old battery with obvious high internal resistance will not only sag in the voltage department but also not be able to discharge high currents. At 4.2V fully charged apparently but when it hits the load it drops to 3.8V or so.. At 3.8V current draw should increase to meet the requirements of the driver in order to supply regulated current to the laser diode..
