Amazing laser, I'm more than jealous now if you don't mind me asking how did you meet the guy that gave you the laser? :)
 
Hmm... I tested it on full power yesterday, on the Laser Power terminals my voltmeter measured 16,6 Volts. Is that 166mW? it can't be 1,6 watts? I haven't aligned the front mirror (need longer TORX) so I guess its far from optimised yet?

I meet him when picked up a 150mW laser diode that i bougth for 60 usd :)

then we discussed lasers for some time in his office, he was clearly a laser geek :)
And he asked me if I wanted an defect argon laser that only had about 700 hours on the timer. YEAH! sure!!! price? I cant sell you an defect laser, its yours for free.

10 min's later at home I found the failure in the PSU and voila :)
 
Lucky, I wish I knew some scientist who would give me an Argon laser for free :D
Maybe I should take a trip down to the University...
 
Okay: last update regarding laser spec :) I asked the dude I got the laser from to recheck the documents that he had regarding the laser-power tests that they did on. and he was sorry to inform me that he had mixed the documents... the right spec on that laser is 150mW, so he was sorry for that... but hey! I got a free argon laser outputting 166mW :) its not the 750 that i hoped for at the beginning, but im realy happy with 166mW :) (16,6Volt on laserpowermeter.)

That's still a decent amount for a nice multi line argon, at-least it won't burn the hell out of your hands when your working with it :D

ha ha, yeah, the beam is beautiful! it looks more powerful than it actually is, outdoor in the sky it looks actually stronger than my 250mW green laser. and not far away from the 500mW green. this is probably due to the optics in the Argon laser.

The fault in the PSU was a badly leaded pin on the circuit.

This laser delivers more power than a normal ALC-60X. The tube is much longer, so it has a higher voltage drop across the tube, this means more power, even at the same current levels.

In another laserforum there is also an ILT6500 posted, with an output power of 260mW multiline argon. The unit looks like yours. Take a look at this (german):

I sent an PM to that user... it looks like the 6500 is extremely rare.
"ILT 6500 ( habe in einer Uni für Wartung einen, ja iwirklich 6500, nicht 5500") i'm not German, but it's not far from Norwegian... he says something like "yes it is actually an 6500, not 5500!) and that it is rare and that it need service or something like that :)

going to compare my modelnr with the one he have, I cant see how the laser powermeter on mine can be correct, it says 166,6mW but it still burns a hole in tick plastic (cellphone car-kit holder.) my 200mW green diode laser can't do that... nor my CNI 150mW (measured to 170mW) it really more like my 500mW laser. maybe 80% of that power.
 
Gas lasers generally have a tighter and all-round better beam than diode or dpss so maybe that's the reason?
 
And you shouldn't forget that beams with shorter wavelength are more powerful. Maybe the blue beam gets more absorbed by the dark material as the green one.

Never take wavelength as an automatic reason for better burning at similar powers. Shorter wavelengths are not more powerful. 200mw of blue burns just as well as 200mw of green assuming the target will absorb each wavelength evenly. In this case, I would guess that the smaller beam diameter, and better beam quality are the main factors to better burning. But who has a green diode laser? Seriously who? Are you sure its not your typical DPSS?
