My First Laser Build

After looking at the Blu-ray phaser some months back I decided to do something similar with an old NES light gun as my host. I've finally finished it and thought I would show the first few pictures of the build. I still have to improve the battery mount inside so I've only got some pictures of the outside and a few beam shots. Pictures are with my Droid so there not as good as they could be. Hope to get more pictures with a real camera later. I used a 6x blu-ray diode with a Micro Flex Driver set to 145ma output. I do not have a LPM so not sure of the mw output of the laser. Powered by 1 CR123A battery. Hope you guys like.

Thanks. Looks like I may be close to a few changes as there is no easy way to get the laser where its mounted to do any focusing. I may be moving it closer to the end or I may have to make it a sawed off pistol.
I think if I move the aixiz module up I should be able to change to an 18650 from the CR123A battery as well, still not sure about doing the battery change. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will have everything done and will post some internal pictures as well.

Very cool thats the first Nintendo laser gun I have seen we need more !
what flavor of gum did you use to hold the wires in place
I wonder did they ever make this model with a chrome finish ? now that would be a sight to see !
Try leaving on a light when you take the picture so we can see where the beam is comming from, the gun and use a little smoke in the room so we can see the beam and not just the dot on the wall

I thought the phaser was cool but am not a huge Star Trek fan and wanted to do something that pertained more to me and being a Nintendo fan I couldn't resist using the old light gun. I will get more pictures in light, although when reassembling it I had a soldering mishap and killed my driver, so when my new one gets here I will get some. The yellow stuff holding the wires down is the putty for holding posters, etc. to walls. I plan on finding another way to hold them in place but you use what is available at the time.

Hot glue works for holding the wiring. Just not on the diode module or driver.. or anything else that gets hot, really.

Nintendo Zapper Beam Shots

Okay, so I got my new driver today from O-like and got it installed and now have some new pictures. Beam shots with smoke were asked for, so I dug out my fogger from halloween a few years back and actually put it to work. The new driver is running at 140mA as that is all I can get it to output but the diode was a 6x so it's a good place to use it. Hopefully the other driver will be better. Anyways on to the pictures. Enjoy.

Not bad for your first build. No heat sink? Is it a Sf or a GGW diode? Just so you know your 6x can handle more current safely 170mA is fine for a 6x, Just want to give you a heads up, Whats the point of a phaser if its not as up to par as it could be.
BTW glue and laser building is a big no no , You said you were letting the glue dry and then you said it was sticky tack lol ....

Thanks. There is a heat sink for the Aixiz module, it is a piece of aluminum that a little longer than the module that I drilled out so the module just fits into it. Didn't heat sink the driver, it's mainly for show so mostly short duty cycles but if I find something that fits into the tube easily enough that may change. The glue was only used to hold the battery holder into place, the plastic was too thin and I didn't want screws sticking out of the handle. The sticky tack was just to hold the wires in place in a few spots, didn't really have anything else at the time, my "lab" is the dining room table in my apartment that I use when I am working, as I live in west Michigan and work in east Michigan, so I missed a few things when I set it up initially and find out what when I need it and don't have it. The diode is only rated for 150mA and I have learned through my reading since the initial post that this is not a 6x, not sure why I thought it was a 6x but I know better now.
Thanks again, I have several more builds in mind although these will more for use than looks.

Thanks. Nope it's just a bare apartment I use when working, it's better than the hotel I could have spent last year in. Plus it's makes a great electronics/laser lab. :yh:
