did you just screw two aixiz acrylic lenses into the 9mm modules thread?

Exactly.
They do far better job than just one lens, they catch a lot more light to transmit, when using only one lens it's really far from the diode and a lot of light does not go though it.

With two lenses, one is very close to the diode and a lot of light goes though.

Yes.
First lens is screwed to 1mm (or less) from diode and collects all light.
And second lens focuses light from first lens.
 
Some day I'll build my own IR laser.
But I need to learn more about it.
A powerful invisible burning laser seems to dangerous to me now =)
 
You can deal with IR safely by having the proper goggles for IR and always using them, even for a "quick test". Most video cams and digicams with preview can see IR quite well. They are handy to help you with lenses and focusing. No need to risk the eyes, especially at multiwatt power levels.

Impressive laser! I've never seen a completely invisible IR laser in real life. Must be pretty cool. Does it burn light colored things?
 
Yes, with that power you can burn colored things...
But you can't burns something that is extremely white, as white paper.

Well actually, all it takes is one tiny microscopic bit of dirt or something , and once that's toast, the charred rmains start burning up the paper, starting the process, you can cut a white paper with only one dot on it, no need to draw the line across it.

I'd try burnign up white paper - keep trying, once you catch a piece of dust or dirt, paper is out of luck. Yo maybe even set it on fire with that montruosity.
 
Hi I'm very new to lasers and looking to make this my first build as it's exactly what I'm looking for.. a cheap and extremely powerful IR laser. I'm sure I can probably figure out the wiring out by browsing the forum while I wait for the shipping, but what exactly would be the material list for this project?

Assuming these are correct it seems what I need to know is what module to get, how do I make (or can I buy) the heatsink, and the wiring if you have a diagram or something.. don't want to waste too much of your time.

Also would this all work with any ir diode off ebay thats 1 watt, or do different wavelengths need different components?

Edit: also what was the total cost of the components for this build?
 
You need 1W IR diode, no matter what wavelength is.

I'd also put LED indicator so you can know when laser is on.
You need any LED (FV less than 4.2V) and resistor to limit current for LED)
And you need heatsink for UF and for this O.like module. You can machine it.

That is pretty much what you need.

One more thing

If you plan to make host case positive, then you don't have to electrically isolate diode from host. But then you cannot use AMC PCB as contact to + pole of battery.

If you plan to make host case negative, then you have to isolate host from diode, and then you can use AMC PCB as plus contact to your battery. (As I did)

So, if you want to isolate module, you should also use thermal tape.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to give me all that info. I just have 2 additional questions. The only 1 watt ir diodes ive been able to find are these ones on ebay 808nm 1000mw 1W burning IR laser diode. USA 3 day ship - eBay (item 270586581155 end time Jun-09-10 10:56:47 PDT) They say they ideally require 1a to 1.3a, would the 1.4a driver board be too much for these diodes or should it be fine? I've been unable to track down a higher wavelength diode like yours

Also from a lot of the other posts I've read focusing seems to be a major issue with these, but from your youtube link yours came out to be what I'd expect of 1 watt focused laser.. this is a total noob question but assuming I replicated your build with the above linked diode would it come out just as powerful?

All enthusiasts here push their diodes on higher currents than recommended currents.
Diode should work fine on 1.4A (even higher current when IR diode is connected to AMC) and give more light.
You only need to take care about duty cycle. Give diode some time to cool down.

Setting the higher current than normal did not result in diode death still, it's kickin' ass even now :)
 
what lens did you use because I used for mine an ar coated 650nm laser lens and it burn it.
 
For burning at longer distances I use aixiz glass lens (650nm coated) and for better burning at shorter distances I use two plastic lenses.
