My <2 Gallon Pico Reef






That's very nice! What equipment are you running there?

I've haven't yet ventured into saltwater mainly its because its expensive and I don't have time to keep up with the maintenance. I hope to give it a shot one day.
 
Yeah if you have any questions feel free to ask. It is just a vase from walmart. The heater is a tetra 50W that was like $12.

Its kind of scary that I let a $12 heater determine what it wants to do temperature wise considering that is $$$'s worth of coral. But what else am I supposed to do. It hasn't failed me yet.

The vase has two holes drilled on the 'neck' part (don't know what else to call it), one hole for the bubbles, and the other for the heater. This makes evaporation very little which is a big deal. If you let too much water evaporate the salt still stays, so the salinity can get too high which in turn kills things.


I do weekly feedings and waterchanges. I put some mysis shrimp in there, let it sit for about an hour. Then do a 100% waterchange. Its <2 gallons of water so it doesn't take long at all.


I learned this all from the pro, Brandon429. He is an amazing guy, he started this concept about 8 years ago and his vase has been going strong ever since.
 
Very nice !!! I have had 29 gal, a 90 gal, and a 14 gal SW.....Have had lotsa toys to go with it !!! Right now.....I am tank-less....first time in about 20 yr !!

The smaller you go....the harder it is to hold the water parameters steady !!!
....and I think 2 gal is the smallest one can go.

One thing I have FINALLY learned......LEAVE SHIT ALONE !! MINIMAL disturbance to your substrate !!!!!!! Just 20% water changes....and in a tank THIS SMALL....once a week.....AND...DO NOT OVERFEED !!! EVER !!!

AND....better to keep outa sunlight !!! Hair algae looks like hell !!! and is hard to eliminate !!!

I have learned the opposite of some of the things you have said actually. The smaller the tank is the harder it is to hold water parameters, it is true. But with this vase, there is very little maintenance at all.

I was told to not ever buy a test kit, so I didn't. You can judge how your water quality is by the way the corals respond. If something doesn't look right, do a 100% waterchange or a couple.

About the 20% waterchange thing, this is true for bigger tanks. But in such a small tank with only corals and a shrimp you can do 100% waterchanges without a problem.

Oh, and ALWAYS overfeed :p you just need to make sure to do a 100% waterchange after so you get all left overs out.
 
Hmmm...interesting....Perhaps the rules for the ultra small takns are different from the nano tank range !! ???

But....every time you do a 100% water change.....you swing your water parameters to a greater degree...or...you might swing them !! ??

Large swings in pH, salinity, temp, nitrate, nitrite give rise to lack of consistency....and in the ocean.....things are very, very constant !!

Well...one thing for sure...If it works .....KEEP DOING IT !!@

Are you talking about light acclimation, or are you asking what lights I have?

To answer both the questions, yes I light acclimate for a little bit when I get new corals. If they look like they are doing good the next day, or day after that. I will lower my light again to where it was. The light I am using is a PAR30.
 
Thats sick! I absolutely love fish/coral tanks. I used to have a few, bu no longer...Someday, when im rich ( :crackup: ) I want to have a wall of my [future] house be one giant @$$ tank. Would be an epic room just to go into and chill out...tanks of any aquatic life are very relaxing and soothing to me.
