MXDL 405nm building kits (DONE)

Re: MXDL 405nm building kits (>100mW)

In the following thread you can see that I've pushed PHR diodes beyond what was ever believed possible, so It may well be that YOUR diodes are capable of so much more. And forthermore, there is a possibility is that the cheaper the kit is, the more powerful the laser might be. Read all about it in this thread (from where I link it's 3 pages long)

Unfortunately, as I've already sent out most of them, I can't re-check them for you. If you have the means of checking them yourselves, -- AT YOUR OWN RISK -- try to find at least the second or third kink, and set the final current to somewhere the middle of a straight line between kinks, that should still be relatively safe. (don't try it with just the flexdrive, as it is too touchy for this job). There is no guarantee that the laser will live as long as it would with a current just below the first kink, although I believe that for the weak ones (with the kink at a low point) increasing them to the designed value from the datasheet (105mW @ 120-150mA) will increase the power without affecting lifetime.

Are you referring to the 6x datasheet here (Sharp)?

Re: MXDL 405nm building kits (>100mW)

Yeah, that's the datasheet i meant with "the Sharp"... That's why i asked if you're refering to the 6x datasheet...

Re: MXDL 405nm building kits (>100mW)

I got my Zom-B kit today in the mail. I got to work nights so tomorrow I will assemble it. I can't wait.

Re: MXDL 405nm building kits (>100mW)

Got my kit today as well! Super stoked to be close to having a BR laser... hell, ANY laser over 1-5 mw :P

In other news... I might have to actually get a MXDL for myself... pretty nice for just a flashlight!

I received and built my new laser. Thank you Zom-B! I hope you plan on doing other kits. if so i would deff buy another one.

I hope you (buyers) are still following this.

There were some misunderstandings about the flexdrives. I installed a metal bridge at the last minute so the pot would not get turned during shipping, however this bridge should not be removed. The points it connects are all ground so there is nothing shorted, and it also doesn't matter if it touches the side of the MXDL. As it was a last minute change, it's not included in the instructions manual.

If you inadvertently removed the bridge, then be sure the little circles in the lower right corner stay connected. This is the range selection, and when they are not connected, the driver outputs a current that is far too low.

I removed the bridge because it wasn't shown or mentioned in the instructions. I thought it was a shorting device of some sort. Likewise when I removed it I also removed the high range selection jumper. After assembly I noticed a lack of power. I checked some things and researched the flexdrive and found info on this high range selection and soldered it back. Power is now restored to original Zom levels.
