I personally hate momentary switchs and pen lasers because they use AAA batteries which go off very fast... My advice still stands, of course, if anyone had tryed it and made a good review.
Just because something has a momentary switch does not mean it has to use AAA batteries (of course). If you're pointing up into the treetops for several seconds at a time, many times, it would be annoying to use a tailcap switch-style laser.
Also, a lower power laser is not going to eat through quality AAA alkalines very fast. And also, they make rechargeable batteries so you could bring a few sets of either if need be.
He's not going to be leaving the laser sit and taking beamshots, he's using it as a pointing device. Momentary is ideal.
Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I think I should look for a 5mW 532nm waterproof unit. I've been looking around, but the only one I can find, other than on ebay, is this: TD-GP-128 5mW 532nm Waterproof Green Laser Pointer: FastTech Forums . Any other suggestions?
You're right, I didn't think about that. But I still haven't see AAA rechargeable batteries with higher voltage then 1.2V:undecided:
luckycharms, there is a red 200mW laser with battery and charger for about $26.00. This could be seen at far distances in the rain forest and would be focusable. It is located at 5mW High Power Red Laser Pointer Visible Beam Daytime | eBay. If you have the time, check it out. Don't let the website title throw you off, if you look you will see it is a red 650nm 200mW laser.
Teej, yeah, they do that for legal reasons. you won't find a laser pointer on eBay over "5mW", but if you look more closely, you'll see that it is not as advertised.
